  1. this is what I get with some mpg's

    --- File details:
Skipped -2 zeroes at start of file
mpgtx: AT EOF - please stop me!
mmm, this file does not start with a pack, offset: -2
use the desperate_mode switch as the first option -X to search for a header in the whole file!
if you want to force the operation. May yield to an endless loop if no valid header is found!
Does not even begin with a 00 00 01 xx sequence!
I:\AVSEQ01.MPG is not a valid mpeg file

if this mpg is in a bin, you get a warning but the program goes through it, completes all the steps, and leaves you with nothing at the end. So I pulled the mpg out, and this is what I get.
How do you use the desperate mode switch, or how to fix the mpg?
this is not plus but 1.1

  2. I never had this problem with any mpg or bin i think your bin and/or mpg is broken.

  3. well, the mpg plays with powerdvd, and the bin burned to cdr plays in my dvd player.

  4. I fixed it by demux/mux in tmpgenc mpeg tools. it turns out that when it muxes, it rewrites headers.

I've run into quite a few of these problems and this workaround is pointless, especially since my 30 free days are up with tmpeg. I'm converting hundreds of svcd tv shows to dvd mpgs and I need something to batch encode all these files for me.

  6. Are you using Isobuster to extract the .dat files?

I used to get this same message when I used SVCD2MPEG, but it was because I was just copying the .dat files from the disc and renaming them to .mpg.

Once I downloaded Isobuster and extracted the files then renamed them to .mpg, everything worked perfectly. For some reason just copying the files and renaming them doesn't work.

You can check out the guide here:

    Hope this helps,

No, these are svcd's I've downloded from the internet, never burned them myself, but as they are posted by other people, the very well might have been burned and then later reposted from the burned copy.

Thanks for the quick response, as it does give some insight on why the files might not work. Any way to correct these files without using the cd, perhaps vcd easy might work, or maybe even something that has a batch function. I will try using vcd easy to repair the file later tonight. I still would suggest this feature be added to svcd2dvdmpg since it seems like the problem occurs quite often.

it seems that is the problem, that my mpegs are not true mpgs, but dat files and needed the riff header changed. VCDEasy did it in a snap, but if it could be added to svcd2dvdmpeg, then i would very much appreciate the time it would save me. Now to author my first svcd-dvd using good old scenarist. Oh yes by the way this is a great program, keep up the good work.

damn it, damn it, damn it. Scenarist checks the gop#, and svcd2dvdmpeg just doesn't change that. This has to be my worst luck ever. Is there any way to use scenarist, as it has got to be the most powerful dvd authoring app around. It took me forever to learn the ins and outs of scenarist, please don't tell me I need to try some other software

The point is not to fool Scenarist to accept the file that has the wrong GOP structure. Even if you use an authoring program that accepts such files, they would most likely be impossible to play on a DVD player.

I am afraid that if your files have the wrong GOP structure (perhaps no GOP headers at all), then you need to re-encode them with an MPEG-2 encoder using DVD compliance.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

no, I think my mpgs had a gop# of 38 when 36 is what is accepted. DVDLab was able to import my movies fine, didn't even use the patch headers option. I've settled on a combination of svcd2dvdmpg, DVDLab 1.3 (to avoid stuttering), and ifoedit (to give me some more advanced control features). Next step is creating batch files, template menus, and macros to let the dvds start rolling. The only part that will require intervention is if the mpgs are really dat files just renamed. Hint, Hint
