I keep reading posts about how many of you are ripping DVD movies to your hard drive in 10 minutes then burning them to a disc in 10-15 minutes. Please tell me what this newbie is doing wrong. Using clonedvd/anydvd combo to rip and burn it takes me 45 minutes to rip and burn the average movie only, no extras. When I use DVD Shrink to rip it takes about an hour for DVD Shrink to anlyse (using deep analysing) and encode DVD movie to my hard drive and then another 25 minutes for clonedvd to burn it to blank dvd, total time this process is about 1 and half hours. I have listed my equipment below, please any suggestions on how I may speed up my ripping/burning process would be greatly appreciated.

    Plextor PX 708A Writer
    Pioneer 105 DVD Rom
    Athlon XP2600 Processor
    512 DDR Ram
    Fuji Blanks 4.7
80G Western Digital Hard Drive 7200rpm

    golfnut -

    let's assume best case scenario - a 4X writer, 4X media, a single-layer disc and a 16x DVD rom.

    ripping - about 5 minutes.
    burning - 15 minutes.
    total - 20 minutes.

but real-world, I haven't found 4x media for my burner at a price I like, so I burn at 2x. And if it's a dual layer disc, I have to add in 15-25 minutes for DVD2One or DVD Shrink, so generally it takes me about 75 minutes to back up a dual-layer disc.

You must be reading at 4x. Get a dvdrom that can read at 12x.

  6. on a 16x reader ripping at optimal speed usually takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes for me with DVD Shrink depending on whether I use deep analysis. then burning takes 15 minutes on a 4x disk and 25 minutes on a 2.4x disk.
