I'm looking for a new part time job whilst I am at university and one of the more enticing jobs (in terms of pay) was a service station attendant job. Basically I would work 2 graveyard shifts a week (9 hours shifts, 9pm-6am alone) which doesn't bother me as I am more a night person and don't go to uni the days I would be working.
So my question is, has anybody here ever worked in a service station doing graveyard shifts and what's it like in terms of security etc. as that is about the only thing that is stopping me from applying. The service stations is in a relatively safe area.
Cheers.

I've never worked in a service station before but one of my buddies has. He made good money but quit because it got too boring being by himself for a long time. But if that doesnt bother you, and the station is safe, I say go for it.

I think you should mention you live in Australia.
where I live in US i wouldnt be CAUGHT DEAD working in a service station on graveyard shift. Its just like asking for bullets to be lodged in your chest several times!
Remember the simpsons episode where the kwikie mart was held up and abu was shot, and only lived because the bullet had deflected off one alredy in his chest from a previous robbery? - thats what it would be like where I live
However..... where you live may be much different -

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
Ya, it just depends on many things! I travel alot, and there are places I won't even stop to GET gas, let alone work there!!!
Then again, here where I live, I sometimes hang out at a 24hr station if I get super bored and drink coffee for awhile. I seldom do that, 15 mile drive from my house! But you know like if I am just comming home from some trip and I am there already and not gonna be sleeping, I'll stay and have coffee.
Some places can be borring, some not so bad. And that depends on the person too. If you have nothing to do for hours except collect money from 3 or 4 people, read a book, do some studying for class. Some people enjoy doing that, me I would be bored doing it.
Also if you don't actually have to do anything but sit there, get a good laptop and burn disks like at home
Or to entertain yourself, punch holes in Disney 48hr DVDS packages if your store gets to sell them
Then again, some places figure not much business at night and that's the shift that does most the real work, like stocking shelves and coolers, mopping floors, cleaning rest rooms, ect...
And that depends too on what type stations you have there, or it is.
We have stations in some places still that just sell Gas and oil, and they even pump it! Most are now selling soda's, lottery tickets, candies, and tons of garbage and even beer. Customer pumps own gas and pays counter person, and buys junk!
So really you gotta look at what kinda station and job it is and the location and is it something you want? Or need??
