Im going away to college in a few weeks i would like to play my stand alone DVD player on my computer. Im intending to purchase a TV tuner card to watch TV on my computer so is it a straight foward thing to hook up my DVD player aswell?
If someone could tell me how i connect the DVD player to my Computer that would be great.

Use composite or S-Video but you will most likely get horizontal lines in the picture due to Macrovision.I would use DVDDecrypter to rip to HDD in File mode then use PowerDVD or WinDVD to watch but of course you need a DVD-ROM($40USD).

Yes, it is very simple. Just get a ATI TV wonder VE card. $49.00. You will NOT get any lines with this card.
See here: http://www.ati.com/products/tvwonderve/index.html -
that card is expensive here in the UK. Is getting one of these expensive ones the only way to aviod getting lines?

wouldnt it just be easier to stick it in the dvd-rom (40$) and you could save some space in your dorm room and leave the stand alone at home ..
easier for audio also .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
ive had nothing but trouble in the past with crashing software and hardware incompability issues. I want to aviod using a DVD rom if possible.

If you are having hw/sw conflicts on your PC, there's no guarantee that a tuner card will be any better.
As a previous poster suggested, a dvd-rom is much simpler. They are as little as $20-25 on sale. Buy one from a place where you can return it if it doesn't work. -
Yep, DVD-ROM is the way to go. Get one that comes with some software so you can watch them (WinDVD or other players.........)

the thing is tho, i already have a DVD rom and its a peice of junk... it never works. Whether thats hardware or software i dont know... but either way it doesnt work and i dont want to spend X ammount on another one for it to be just as crappy.

What are the specs of your system? You should really get the bugs worked out, so you can realize the true potential of your system. What DVD player do you have in your PC?
