Making a Avi to Video cd widescreen?

I am trying to make an avi into a video cd and have it show widescreen on a dvd player.
I recently burned a videoCD using Nero burning-rom. When i burned the avi to the CD-r and played it in the dvd player i had both sound and video. But the video was stretched to fit the whole tv screen, thus distorting the picture. Is there anyway i can encode it when it is burned so that it is viewed in widescreen and not fullscreen so the picture is better?

Did you try encoding with Tmpgenc first? What resolution was your AVI btw, did it come from a "standard" sized image,(like 4:3 TV image for example?)
