I have a Pinnacle DC-10 card to capture my videos from the VCR, but DC-10 makes the captures in a weird avi format then I have to encode to MPEG-2 to make my dvd's.
I've seen Pinnacle Studio 8 is maybe the slowest program to render these videos, now I use Ulead Videostudio.
Is there a faster program to render avi to mpeg-2 over there?

  2. Either CCE or Mainconcept for speed, Tmpgenc for ease of use and value for money (but definatley not speed)

CCE 1-pass CBR is the fastest. Quality???? Well that depends on the source quality and type of video (action/drama/dark/etc).

Remember, speed and quality are on different axises, you have to sacrifice one for the other.

  4. Um, not necessarily.

I run MainConcept at the high settings and the results are indistinguisable from the original D1 source -- I've compared with TMPGEnc running overnight (8 hours or so at double pass) and the results are at least as good.

MainConcept does very high quality encoding at near real time -- it's definitely worth the $150 (I've never tried CCE but I hear good things about its quality as well).

  5. Anything is better in time and quality than Studio 8. The other thing is compress on the fastest machine you can get. Rather take the time with an offline system than try an on the fly compresson. Quality is much better.

I have my DC10+ on a 2.2ghz Althon along with the burnner drive and 512mb of memory. Run tmpeg for compresson and AVI_IO for capture.

I know its going to sound strange but makes sure you have the abolute best signal feeding the card. This cuts down on the amount of filters needed in the processing. I know but some do forget this triva little pice of information.

Actualy the format from the DC10+ is Motion Jpeg. Basically it only compresses the current frame. Mpeg takes that and work on mutiple frames.

  6. I don't get it.... Why is everybody so concern about speed of encoding. Fast speed and superb quality comes with a lot of money. If you can afford it..... go ahead...

  7. Rather have quality over speed.

For me. I just set up a 2nd computer. Fill Tmpge que and let it compress and shut down when done. If it takes a day no problem.

  8. Exactly.... quality is more important.... (even that it is very subjective)

  9. Just curious about your wierd AVI format. Isn't it DV1 or DV2?

I capture from my Canon into Ulead VideoStudio, render back to DV with smart rendering. Very fast, then batch up my encoding jobs in TMPGEnc to run at night and while I am away.

I can get a lot done that way. Only drawback is you need a lot of disk space to do this.
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

Same can be done with Pinnacle Studio version 8. When you save back to DV AVI. It renders only edited parts. Rest is just plain copy.

Thta "weird" format Pinnacle DC10 uses is as someone said before MJPEG (Motion Jpeg) which has avi extension.
