how many dvd burners can you put in a computer?

Im wondering what kind of mother board can you use to put more than four burners at a time. Right now I have asus mother board with four burners in it. Does anyone know what kind of motherboard I can use to put more than four?

Any Motherboard. Just run SCSI. You can (with the right drives) run 15 drives per card. Needless to say you will pay more for SCSI drives.

Excluding A, B, and C, you have 23 letters left to name drives. While Windows 2000 can deal with more than 26 drives, Nero/Recordnow and other burner software can not. Assuming no B, you can get 24 drives.

Realistically there is absolutely no reason to run 4 DVDR drives. There is only 1 practical use for that...

Hi get a mother board with a IDE Raid built in , this will add another 4 IDE channels, or buy a IDE Raid card. You could go SCSI but that is the expensive route. Gigabyte, ASUS and AOPEN all have motherbaords with RAid built onto the motherboard.

Why do you not just go and buy a duplicator ?

Don't forget, not every burning application supports multiple burners, and those that do may well insist they are all identical and loaded with identical media as far as speed rating goes.

just connect them all up with firewire and use prassi ... i have between 4 and 6 on firewire and duplicator also connected by firewire .. (lately now just 2 by firewire plus the duplicator and a authoring burner and a DLT connected via an external scsi ..

Just a normal everyday IDE controller card. No need for IDE raid. Or a bunch of firewire enclosures. Put all the drives in firewire, that way you will only have to turn on the ones you need. And they will not tax your powersupply. At some point, you will run out of power! Nero says it can burn to more than one firewire drive at a time, though I do not have more than one to try it for you. For theprice of 2 drives, I'll test it for you

Buy 2 boxes, move 2 drives to the boxes. Test. If good, buy more of the same boxes, and more of the same model drive. Move 2 at a time until you have all that you need. Burn 'til there ain't no more burnin' to be done.

Since this thread is already started, I have a Highpoint Rocket 133s card and it doesn't seem to recognize anything but a ide harddrive. DVD or CD drives won't work. I wonder if it's just this card or is there some other problem. I would like to add another CD burner.[/quote]

Get a plain old ordinary Promise Technologies IDE controller. They have old ones that are ATA66 and newer up to SATA. Should be easy to track down.

I very much doubt that he has four now as he has posted. If he did, then where would his hard drive be hooked up. And if he did have four burners and a hard drive hooked up, he would of already known the answer to his question. Or doesn't he know that he might already be using an on board raid or ATA PCI card? Or maybe two of them could be USB? Who knows! Then it would be a USB issue.

I do have 4 burners hooked up to the asus motherboard, and none are usb. Ive already thought about that. I just want to be able to put more than 4 in a system. And however the hard drive is hooked up is up to my brother who built the system. He saids that no mother board supports more than 4 burners I wanted to know if you could hook up more than 4.

Okay whatever you say. Still don't think you know what you have in your system, maybe it's time to go ask your brother how he did it. You might have on board raid which would give you the ability to support 8 devices, unless you have a single raid IDE connector in which case you could support 6 devices. Either way, I don't know why you would need 8 DVD burners unless of course you are stamping out wedding videos for sale.

I do know whats in my system. Its a single Raid that holds 4 burners and 2 of my harddrives. I wanted to know if there was something else out there that could hold more than 4. Im in college working for student organizations that want to put their events on DVD for their members and others. Thats why I need more than 4 burners. Its not enough to meet their demands. I have the money to buy a duplicator, but its not what I want. I rather have a computer and a duplicator all in one. My dorm room isnt all that big for so much stuff.

Buy an ATA PCI controller card if you have an extra PCI slot. That will give you 4 additional devices (2 per IDE). Are you running a server case? Cause thats a lot of bays.

I would go with external firewire enclosures and "daisy-chain" them.Fry's sells them for $50-75.

I would try the firewire too. Move them 2 at a time with testing to make sure that it will work. That way you could return any un-opened boxes if it didn't work. If you wanted, you could buy the burners already in a firewire box.

Or get one of those duplicator/printer and let it go all night, unattended.

I have extra bays for 4 more devices. The case is custom built by my brother. Thanks for all the help. I have one more pci slot open. Im gonna try that method. If not then I guess fire wire isnt so bad. I would get a duplicator but...like I said...no space in a small dorm room. Plus I dont live in state My home is all the way across the country. So I have no where to put a duplicator. But ill give your advices a try.
