  1. Hi,
I've been reading through the archives of the well documented problems with this DVD burner and I have now fallen foul to one of the problems after the 4th burn!! In fairness to the drive so far, it has produced no coasters (using Sony DVD+R DPR120N2) , and the quality seems to be fine also. At the moment the only problem is as follows.

    Problem:
After burning from VOBs (ripped with DVD Shrink 2.3) with NERO 6 Express, the drive pops open to give back the burned disk. The drive then becomes unresponsive and will not close until a full re-boot.

    Question:
Has anyone who has had the same mechanical problem with the drive, successfully solved it by installing the firmware update to 1.0c? My point being, I really don't want to install this on an otherwise "running system" if it will not change this mechanical problem.

Many of the posts ( and on other forums ) seem to report lots of different errors, some successfully solved, others not with this firmware update. But nothing specific on whether the "stuck drive tray while opened/closed" problem is solved with this update. Also, is this problem in any way related to a setting somewhere? The drive is set as the master on the second channel, with a LG CD-RW as the slave. I have not to this point changed PIO or DMA settings.

Thanks for your help in advance.

  3. Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply, I need to run some more burns to calculate the consistency of this problem as its happened on the 3rd and 4th burns out of 4 in total. So I can't be sure if it's going to be a consistent problem or not.

Thanks for the advice, if it keeps up I don't see any other avenue but returning it.

  4. I dont know what you are using but Im using Nero & one option in Nero is to NOT automatically eject it after its done. You might look into that option.

  5. Hi handyguy,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into this option. But my expectation from reading this forum and others is that the drive will remain closed and unresponsive rather than open and unresponsive...

But as someone who is curious about why or how failures happen, I'd like to find out some reason as to why it is that the drive seems to die after what seems to be a simple software controlled eject command... I won't be happy circumventing this problem purely by disabling otherwise useful/not so useful options in Nero 6.

  6. I believe there is a problem with the sony drives (havent heard of any others) and nero 6. I had a dru500a that had this exact same problem, and now i have a new sony pc with the dru512 (or something like that - its another dual format burner) built in. It happens almost every single time I burn with nero. It does not happen with ANY other dvd burning software.

  7. I suspect also that it is a Nero/driver issue.

I once messed up my drivers and Nero (5.x) would always fail to burn, and on top of it it would lock the drive (Sony DRU-510A) so I couldn't eject it.

Interestingly, running Nero again and ejecting the drive from inside Nero worked, and unlocked the drive.

This has been a known issue with DVD Architect. I guess it applies to Nero as well. Here is the way to get around rebooting:

On your desktop, click on MY Computer. When it opens look for the Sony Drive E or F or whatever. Right click on the drive and then left click on eject. No more having to reboot.

I would point the finger at Nero 6 before dissing your hardware.

I had this happen yesterday on my DRU500ax for the first time ever (and have burnt over 500 DVD's with it), and I have only been using Nero 6 since last week.

Note that I did not have to reboot. I had to burn another DVD, so I ignored the fact it did not close (call it "tunnel vision" or "sheer bloody mindedness") and set up everything ready for the next burn (using Nero). When it got to the point of asking for new media to be inserted, all of a sudden the close button worked again and the burn continued as if nothing had happened. I think Nero at this stage resets whatever setting it previously forget to free up previously.

  10. Hey zTank/Popee/Nerdboy,

Thanks for your advice and tips. I guess that is a plausible cause for errors, but what I'm finding astonishing is the number of failures with this drive, which is leading me to believe that Sony has made some sort of mistake with engineering be it software or hardware.

Incidentally Im using Nero 6.0.0.0, but I see that there is an update on the site to 6.0.0.15, does anyone know what issues have been resolved between these releases?

  11. I have a sony dru510a and have made 8 or 9 copies so far with NO failures. I think you either may need to up your firmware to 1.0c or make sure the media you are using is not junk. I have used Nero 6.0.0.11 i think and never experienced anything you are experiencing. I have also used dvdxcopy xpress and it works flawlessly...Sorry you are having so much trouble! Good luck!

  12. My 510A with 1.0C firmware, the tray will not close after completing the DVD burn via nero express 6.0.0.15. Only way to close is right click on the drive in my computer and select eject. Not sure if this an issue with Nero or the 510A. Was using 500AX with Nero 5.5 with no problem before upgrading to 510A/nero6.
