well it's possible to fit it all on one disc by compressing it, it just won't look very good.
DVDshrink isn't really designed for splitting a movie across two discs, but it can be done. Simply set the start point of a the movie to chapter 1, and if it has (for instance) 30 chapters, set chapter 15 as the end point. Set the appropriate level of compression to fit the first 15 chapters on one disc. (it's possible it won't need any further compression) output the files to a folder "disc1"
Now start again, and set chapter 15 as the start point, and chapter 30 as the end. again, set the compression level if needed and output the files to a folder "disc2" now just burn the two folders as normal. Job done.

It fits on 1 disk real nice if you use SVCD resolution. Actually xSVCD since you can run bitrates over 4000 peak and it's flawless on a 25" TV. Still use the 5.1 soundtrack :P

  4. Its only $14.99 at circuit city & you get two disks. Might just be worth buying it.

This is where the re-encoders wipe the floor with the transcoders. I used CCE 4 Pass - with original AC3 and 2 sub streams for the Elvish - and the quality is excellent - very comparible to the original - bitrate ranges from 0.5 (yes really.. to approx 5 Mbit/Sec for the battle scenes - average was 3.5 Mbit/Sec if I recall.)

I did the movie with DVDShrink to start with (being a 3 hr movie I wanted to see what it was capable of..) and it used 66% compresion and the result was not good - infact it was awful....

So, 3hr movie on 1 disk - possible but you can't use a transcoder to do it ..

(of course - all my opinions so I have no intetion of starting any flame wars here ...)

  6. where in dvd shrink do i choose this option? for two disks?
    Quote Quote
  7. yes this is true, trancoders need not apply here

Ran thru IC7 Sunday after running thru DVDshrink
saturday, and i'd have to say IC7 wasnt too bad,
shrink was horrible, same probably on DVD2one,
IC7 was like 60% even came out as 4.3g's, take a
chance either way, unlless ya go CCe route....

  8. i think i'll go the two disk route and get great quality. So it will be 2 disks, big deal.

    following a PM request:

The process in dvdshrink 2.3 is as follows
    Click open disc
select the drive with the disc in.
    select re-authour.
Drag main movie into DVD window.
    unselect unwanted audio/subtitle streams.
    press start/end button.
leave start frame as chapter 1
set end frame to chapter 15 (or halfway through movie)
    Press backup button.

Once done, repeat the process, but the start point should be chapter sixteen.

You can try DVDFab. its free and will split to 2 disks.

  11. Yeah DVDFab is the way to split

    @musher70
Did you perform a Deep Analysis when DVDShrink 3 produced that horrible quality?

    @flan
Why would anyone still use version 2.3 ?

I'm waiting for the extended edition before I go to two discs (3.5 Hrs+!) - on LOTR TFOTR Extended edition I got the Original VOBs on to two DVDR's with a bit of playing and I'm hoping I can do the same with the Two Towers Extended edition when it comes out in November ...

Because it does everything i need, and because the Beta is, well, a Beta.
The only thing i see as marginally useful is being able to re-author from multiple discs, but that's only useful for series of things, and using 2 DVD-Rs to replace one DVD-9 with 30 minute or 45 minute episodes hasn't gone wrong so far.

    kohlie,
    Glad to hear it

  16. How do you re-author mulitple disk into one using DVD Shrink? I have four short DVD's I like to squeeze into 2 DVD-R's.

Also I tried using DVD Shrink 3.0 (Beta 5) to backup my "Last Emperor" DVD. After the file has been opened. It list the disk as having greater than 4.4 Gigs (5.8 Gigs) even on automatic compression setting. In fact, I couldn't for the life of me, figure out how to compress it so that it can fit into 4.4 Gigs (or 1 DVD-R). Removing all the extras on the disc simply decreases the compression rate, but still giving me over 5 gigs!!

All other backups have been fine with auto-compression except this disc. Anyone else with this problem? Thanks.

  18. Thanks Tompika!

I will try that soon. But what about the "Last Emperor" problem. Any idea why auto-compression didn't compress the disc to 4.4 gigs?

If you didn't try the deep analysis function, give it a shot, should give you a more accurately sized output.

If not, try setting the levels manually, try it at a level that hsould work, if it comes out too big, try a level higher and so on until it fits.

I did the deep analysis and it's still over 5 gigs (doesn't really change compression at all). How do you set the compression manually? I have version 3.0 (beta 5) and it does it automatically. The ratio bar (which seems to be the only ajustable part) seems to start at where the auto-compression sets and goes only lower (ie: cannot compress beyond what's set automatically). Sorry about the dumb questions. I'm very new to all of this. Thank you all for your help.

  21. I think we're gonna have to accept that DVDShrink has its own limits

    1. I was able to backup ONCE_UPON_A_TIME_IN_AMERICA I-II
two main title more than 10GB to compress to a DVDR

    2. Other movies around 7-8GB give it hard times
need to be reauthored , remove DTS audios so you can back them up

Tried decrypting to HDD, DeepAnalysis, wont work.

Oh...That's too bad to hear that. I really like the simplistic DVDShrink! So what other software should I be using instead? So to avoid this problem in the future. Anything good that's free?

    tawnyag75,

Try using the older version, 2.3

It's given me no problems at all and you can set the compression levels yourself.

  24. In DVDShrink go to Preferences and select "Custom" and enter 9,999 MB that way it won't compress the DVD.

  25. by entering 9,999mb it will fit onto one dvd-r disk? a 3hr movie?
