after getting my pc allll setup up (check this thread if you want more reading http://www.amdforums.com/showthread...15&pagenumber=1 ) i realized, after all that, that i wanted my 40 gig drive (slave) to be the OS disk, adn the 120 gig drive to be used for video stuff (and i had the 120 have the OS on it ), cuz people recommend that so that you wont have other random stuff going in the background on that drive whilst capturing, etc..
so i reluctantly started the win2k install again with the 4 floppies and told it to delete both drives, and then said to create a partition on the 120 gig one, then on the 40. when i said, install on the smaller drive, it said 'aright but it has to be fat32' for some reason, so i figured, ok, i can convert it later in windows, but after that it first formatted the 120 gig drive (WHICH TAKES FOREVER!!!!!!!!!) then i assume the 40 gig drive (cuz the 2 times ive done this in the past day or so, ive not been there to see it happen...) but it says that the drive is either defective or not connected properly, and that setup cannot continue.
im gonna open up the pc and reset the jumpers but it was the same setup i had in my pc before, so i didnt bother changing em this time around.
someone suggested this setup to me:
Primary Master: 40gig
Primary Slave: Liteon
Secondary Master: 120gig
Secondary Slave: Samsung
but i was under the impression that one should have the storage drive (larger, faster drive in my case) on the primary ide channel as master, regardless, and not with an OS so background things wont interfere with it.
another person told me to disconnect the 120 gig drive and run the 40 gig drive for the install but choose repair and do a chkdsk/ r on it.
hows that sound?
i just want my new pc!!!

The set up suggested near the end of your post is probably the best set up.
I would disconnect the 120G during the install on the 40G. You just reconnect it after the install is over and windows sees it wihtout a problem.
If you are really worried about interuptions on your 120G why are you partitioning it? -
i was just being eager and trying to kill 2 birds w/ one stone, instead of doing it in windows
so if i do go with that setup suggested at the end of the first post, wouldnt that noticiably slow down my 120 gig storage/capture drive? -
I don't see why it should slow it down, especially with it being faster (although the infromation has to travel further along the IDE cable)
My drive settings are:
Primary master: 60GB (OS partitioned for storage, editing)
Primary slave: 80GB (Capture)
Secondary master: Pioneer DVD-Rom drive
Secondary slave: Pioneer 105 burner
Try those settings if you want, I have never had any speed issues.
What I think you partitioned the 120GB for was editing the videos on, but this will make the drive slower as it has to access the video from both parts of the drive at the same time.
If you did, however, plan on using it for storage, that would probably be OK as long as it wasn't being accessed during capturing.
Most people on this site would suggest having a seperate drive for capturing, but as you have just bought everything, that is not an option.
