  1. Help me install my highspeed USB PCI card on Windows 98SE, I have driver but can't find the card under device manager. I believe I simply find the card and update the driver, which I have on CD. Can't figure this one out guys. I've gotten too used to XP. I have the card plugged into a PCI slot, I went to the add hardware manager w/ no luck. I tried searching for recently new plugged devices with no luck. I can't see it under device manager anywhere. Thanks. Please Help. Thanks

Try a different PCI slot for the card. The one under the video card is usually a bad choice, the other's may be better. That's usually for IRQ conflicts, though it should still show up in the Device Manager. The USB 2.0 controllers will be under the other USB devices and are usually called 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller'.

Does the computer have any USB ports at all, besides the new card you are installing?
If you're not getting anything, I suspect you may be missing something in the OS or the BIOS.

I've found help on this site before: http://www.usbman.com/Troubleshooter%20General.htm
This is for older motherboards: http://www.usbman.com/Troubleshooter%20General.htm#Older%20Systems

You may also need a motherboard BIOS upgrade to enable USB on a older MB.

There's a lot more on that site if you look around. I've used add-on USB 2.0 cards on W95 computers as old as 1997, but it might take a bit of work. Some brands of USB cards may also work better than others.

The last time I installed USB to w '98SE machine the instructions told me to install the card and then run the CD (supplied) and select install from the displayed menu and hey presto it installed and worked - it was NEVER detected as new hardware

It could be worth your while checking the disk just in case it's got the same stuff on it - the instructions are probably written around XP - so it's also worth looking through the disk for a 9X update file or instructions.

If the card was detected and you didn't install drivers immediately the card will be an "Unknown Device" in Device Manager with a name which may or may not be meaningful depending what Plug and Pray thinks it's called.

You can sometimes persuade windows to find new hardware by deleting the unknown devices from Device Manager and rebooting - then they should pick up at New Hardware - unless windows has some type of driver already installed - which logically it shouldn't but then whoever said anything in windows is logical

But some things are the complete opposite. You install the drivers first and then the hardware.

As in most cases, if it don't do what you expect it to do, RTFM!

You have a valid point. There are many times that you have to install the drivers first, and then you insert the hardware. This is really true when it comes to USB devices. It is a general rule of thums to install the drivers first.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

  7. Yep, motherboard never had usb before. It a 1996 computer and I have no clue what motherboard ACER used. Infact, it doesn't even have a computer model #. I will play around a little more but may have to scrap the idea I guess. Thanks
