I am sorry if this sounds complicated, but bear with me...
I recently bought a TDK VeloCD 52x/24x/48x cd writer (nero express version 5.5.9.15 was coupled with the writer). I made a VCD on a memorex picture cd-r, and was able to view the VCD on my pioneer dv-333 DVD player. All is well...
Now, I want to buy a camcorder. I know, I know, there are many different recording formats. However, in general, will it be possible to record movies on the camcorder, put the movies onto my hard drive (via firewire, I assume), and then burn those movies onto cd-r/rw with nero? I would purchase the MPEG-2/SVCD plugin from nero's website. Any ideas?

Yes you can do it.
I dont suggest using Nero to do it.
I use VirtualDub to capture and TMPGEnc to encode it to MPEG-2 and VCDEasy to author and burn the CD.Ejoc's CVD Page:
DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy
DVD:
DVDShrink -> RecordNow DX
Capture:
VirualDub -> AVISynth -> QuEnc -> ffmpeggui -> TMPGEnc DVD Author
