InstantCopy file size problem ... help

I followed the guide on here to rip a dvd-9 to dvd-5 using instant copy but have a problem with the file size - it is set to make the size at 4.31gb but when i run it and it encodes the movie it gives me 4 pdi files only totaling 3.1gb - the original move size was about 5.5 gb - i have tried this on 2 different machines (one running xp and one running 2000) and get the same results - am I missing something somewhere that is forcing instant copy to make the result smaller than it is supposed to be??? The transcoded size in the customize disc screen says 4.27 (4.31 GB) but as I said I'm only getting about a 3 gb pdi set

Are you running the latest update, which is #3 (7.0.3.140)? I've found that this version gets close to the 4.3 GB limit. Also, have you check out the IC guide at http://www.mrbass.org/instantcopy/ ? I've found this guid to be very useful.

Yep - tried it with the latest version (7.03.140) and with (7.01.125) both gave me the same prob and the guide I used was the mrbass one so I just used dvdshrink 3 beta 5 and that worked fine with the quality being great. But I still can't seem to figure out why instant copy is outputting the correct file size

are you doing movie only and is it a 2.35:1 aspect ratio?

it sounds like you are

have a look around the forum for sizing issues with IC regarding this aspect as it's been explained numerous times

good news is though it is no longer apparent in IC 8 , so just wait till the update being released shortly and do your backup then

what's the ratio then?, is it 1.85:1 as I've never heard of any 1.85:1 that undersizes that much as it was normally about 7-9% undersized so that is why most people ended up with around 4Gb so that's why I am assuming it's 2.35:1 which I'm sure can still be in a 16:9 format (my brain ain't working at the moment)

so does the movie have visible black bars in the image and are you doing movie only?

Also another quick question - this movie that i had copied was 96 mins long and with movie only the file size b4 encoding was about 5.5 GB. I have another movie I am copying which is 118 mins but b4 encoding the file size for movie only is 4.8 GB. Why would a longer movie have a lesser file size than a shorter one?? These movies are not copies but actual movies from the store so I'm guessing that maybe different bitrates were used when these were encoded? Is there a standard or typical bitrate used when movies are put on DVD ?

can't suggest anything more than wait for IC8 if you want to use IC or else just use DVShrink like you have for future problem DVD's

and yes DVD's have different bitrates in both audio & video so size is not related to length in any way, or at least that's what the women tell me

I have a suggestion. Change what you rip with.

I just backed up LOTR TT. First I used DVDshrink to rip out audio and cut off credits, etc. Then I used IC7 for endoding. This has worked beautiful in the past. BUT IC7 would not get the file size less than 5.5 Gig or something like that no matter what I targeted. I even tried targeting 2.0 Gig, not dice.

So I tried ripping with dvdtoolbox (free). I set IC7 to a target of 4.5Gig and got something like 4.28. Close enough, my time is worth something to me.

To sum it up, I have had a very hard time getting dvdshrink ripped files to give me any predictable IC7 encode size.

this is because IC still sees the complete file and gets confused by files stripped by DVDShrink when using reauthor mode

it's never been recommended to do this. It's better to rip the whole movie, use IC but oversize by whatever the credits would approximately be and then use DVDShrink afterwards to cut them off

I may have a method where you can cut the end credit off just by modding the IFO and then using IC as it only recognises what you want without even needing DVDShrink
