The firmware that is floating around the web can't upgrade one of my burners. I believe this burner is for the non-US market.

That makes no difference - that is one reason why drives are not region locked out of the box... the manufacturer simply does not know where a specific drive will end up.
If you must "upgrade" your burner with hacked firmware, there are several sites mentioned in these forums and numerous different versions. You may have just been unlucky and got a lemon. Try downloading a different one or a copy of the firmware from a different location. -
