  1. I am sitting here at my desk... staring longingly at my new Sony DRU-510A.

Unfortunately... I have no DVD media to burn on!

Can anybody fill me in on some cheap DVD media that works well with the DRU-510A? I really can't afford to burn a bunch of coaster trying different things...

I am more than willing to order on-line and in bulk if that is what I need to do to get a good price.

Also, I will need at least a few DVDs to get me through... anything I can pick up at Office Depot that works well with the DRU-510A?

    Thanks!

    Dave

Check out the DVD Media link on the left and make sure you get a DVD-RW to test on.

I have the DRU510A but am still new at all this. I've tried Princo's 4x and have had problems with them.

i read that ritek's are reliable and popular

Office Depot usually carries TDK and Fuji media. They carry other brands as well, but you can't go wrong with either one of those. Also, keep in mind that your Sony can write on + or - media, so buy whichever is cheaper.

  4. This is what I use in my Sony DRU-510A, and never made one coaster out of a hundred blanks.

I test using a RW blank, if in doubt.

Ritek 1X-4X Certified GO4. They burn at 4X or faster.

I get them here as well.............. Meritline.com

  5. Ritek 4x is good and I use a ton of the CompUSA brand 1x DVD-R which sells at $45 for a pack of 50 these days and burns at 2x speed on the Sony. Also any flavor TDK works well on the Sony.

I have successfully burned several different brands in my DRU-510A: Memorex, TDK, Maxell, Verbatim, Princo, Ritek and BeAll. I have purchased them at CompUSA, Meritline.com, Staples, Wal-Mart and Target.
I try to stay away from anything but 4X -R or +R. The slower speeds take too long to burn.

hey man, how are you geeing to your comp usa brand to burn at 2x? i used to be able to , till i updraded the firmware from 2.0c, to d.0f..... not all i can get is 1x burn.... this sucks!

  8. The DRU-510A firmware is only up to version 1.0c

You must have the DRU-500A which has the 2.0f firmware.

These are not the same drives.

  9. Don't forget burning the disc is only half the story - whether or not your "best disc for a burner" will play back on the target device is another matter !

I can give you a list of discs that won't work in my DVD player but burn (and play back) perfectly in the recorder.

The CompUSA 50-pack spindles are Optodisc, which do still burn at 2x with the 2.0f firmware. The discs in the 10-pack cardboard boxes w/jewel cases are Lead Data which only burn at 1x with 2.0f (but work really well otherwise).

As for good 4x media, Ritek G04 and BeAll are probably the best 4X -R I've tried for the DRU-500A. I prefer Ritek myself, the discs just feel more solid and better made, and I like the non-shiny top surface for writing on. I have not had great luck with Optodisc silver top 4X. Optodisc gold top 4X seems to work okay but not as well as the Riteks.

actually you are dead wrong.... they burn (the spindles) at 2x, only if you have firmware 2.0c..... do a little research before posting mis-information.... why do i know this, i bought a 50 pack spindle of the compusa brand, and they only burn at 1x (without 2.0c).

well thats of no use to anyone in the forum who hasnet paid membership to pcclub..... and they are mailorder..... how about a REAL solution to the problem, other than "shop around"

  14. PC club has no membership requirements, they have local stores through out the US and you can simply purchase them in the store or offline. I was simply trying to give everyone another solution to purchasing 4x speed dvd media that works on the Sony for a relative inexpensive price. Sorry that my 1 line statement was not clear enough. I was not making a smart comment to give up the other media just simply letting them know these 4x media work and they are inexpensive. By the wat they even have a store locator on the web page, maybe they have a store near you. www.pcclub.com

As for the firmwares, I have noticed that some firmware do better on some media than others, so as a rule of thumb keep all your firmwares. The DRU500a for instance burns 4x on older 4x media with fw 1.0D and not with the FW 2.0 series.

Next time, try and be a solution not a problem.

Here is the product code and link

I bought a 50 pack spindle also and I can only report what I observed...i.e. that they were Optodisc media and burned on my DRU-500AX with 2.0f firmware at 2x. I've only gone through the first three or four discs so far though. CompUSA uses at least three different suppliers (Optodisc, Lead Data, and I think either Prodisc or Princo) so it's possible that they are using multiple suppliers for the 50-packs, or different generations from the same supplier.

  16. Metaluna, you are correct in saying they could be different disc. Manufacturing dates could be different and so fourth. My original Ritek G4 will only burn at 4x with FW 1.0d yet the G4 at pcclub now by Ritek burn at 4x with the 2.0f. I will compare the codes not that I am overly concerned. I was just letting everyone know that the ones PC Club have right now are working just fine, and regardless of speed, the Ritek disc have been very good media, I have burned a few hundred spindles.

  17. I wound up buying 2 15 packs of Verbatim DVD-R for 37.20 taxes included.

Did I do OK? I note no mention of speed on these... what speed can I burn them at?
    Quote Quote
  18. When no speed rating is displayed, they are rated at 1X, but your burner should be able to burn them at 2X. These Verbatim brand discs are made by either Ritek or CMC.

  19. I am burning away happily at 2X with these dvd-r's

Now... if I could just figure out how to split a DVD9 into 2 DVD5s I would be in hog heaven!

Why did'nt you get the 4X +R Verbatim discs ? Same price and they burn twice as fast . About fifteen minutes per disc .
    Quote Quote
  22. I didn't see the +Rs... maybe they were sold out at my local Office Depot?

I've got the DVD9 to 2xDVD5 thing down cold now too... I'm using DVD Decrypter, DVDFab, and CopyToDVD.

For the DVD5 to DVD5 I'm just using DVD Decrypter.

When I place an online "bulk" order I will probably order the +Rs just to get a better burn speed, but for now I am happy
