  1. When encoding with TMPG, my cpu usage is at 100%. What I want to know is will this kill my computer sooner than later? Sometimes I'm also surfing the net or listening to music while I'm encoding.

  3. There is nothing wrong with running your CPU at 100% Some people say that it wears the computer down, however, I do not believe that. I took many hardware design classes in college and if the tepurature of the chip remains within limits, I do not see any valid reason not to use it at 100%. There is a miniscule amount of damage done, but it would take years of never stopping to cause enough damage to make it unusable. Well after the time you will upgrade anyway. (I am talking in the range of 10-20 years here)

If you want to do other things while it is encoding, lower the priority of TMPGEnc. There is an option in one of the menus in TMPGEnc to do that. If you put it to below normal priority, it will only use the CPU if nothing else is using it. Then you can surf the net, play music or whatever without a slowdown. However, realize that doing this will make the time it take to encode the video longer.

  4. 100% usage is no big deal. No need to worry much. TMPGEnc is known to make CPU usage to 100%. I have done many encodings overnight with the option in TMPGEnc to shut down when job is finished. My home PC has had no damge, so far I could tell.

We have a rather old Pentium 2 based NT server (1998) at our office. We use it for testing our Oracle Database based products. On these servers, the CPU usage goes 100% quite often. Apart from annoying slow performance nothing else has happened. The server works fine till date. OK, this is a server class machine but basically CPU is still the same.

As binks120 stated earlier, you should worry about temperatures - especially CPU temperature.

  5. One other thing you haven't mentioned is you CPU make - AMD or Intel. Pentium processors are not known to overheat. On the other hand AMD processors heat up quite a lot especially when overclocked.

Suggest that you fill up the 'Computer Details' in your profile.

  6. It's AMD Athlon 1.4 GHZ. I downloaded a program that monitors the temp and it hovers around 43 C most of the time. Should be alright, I hope.

  7. like what was said, having 100% is no big deal.some programs that use alot of cpu like TMPGEnc will use what % is not being used.yes the temps go up.55c and under is a safe temp.
i have my cumputer at 100% 24/7 for almost two years.i will upgrade long before the processor will die.
