How to increase brightness of a mpeg2 movie

adjust your TV.....cause else you will have to re encode that mpeg2 file which equals less quailty......works for me 100% no audio sync problems no jerky play back and if it already works in you r stand alone player...bang 100% reliebality.......or re encode the avi IF you have it still

Perhaps an even better solution is to adjust it as it is being captured. To adjust a TV means he has to readjust once he want to watch something else. If he captures in Virtual Dub, I know it has a brightness filter, as do several capture applications.

The problem is that this move has never been captured nor it was in AVI formar. It was shot directly as mpeg2 by MicroMV camera and transfered to PC

If you can withstand the loss of quality from one more encoding, try Virtual Dub's filter, or TMPGEnc's Settings under the Advanced tab.

TMPGEnc doesn't accept mpeg2 as a valid input format

I beg to differ, my esteemed colleague. TMPGEnc means Tsunami MPG Encoder. It does accept MPEG-2 if you trial period has not expired and you have Direct Show set as the highest priority in your Environmental stetiing-->VFAPI tab.

If you are watching you mpeg clip on a PC I think the problem is that your monitor is not adjusted properly. For digital image/video work recommended setting is a monitor gamma of 2.2 for PC, 1.8 for Mac. You'd be surprised how many PC monitors are actually cranked way down on brightness. As a result the black level is to high and all the low intensity details get blured into one dark color. For the procedure on adjusting gamma do yahoo search on "monitor gamma adjustment". You're going to find few test patterns and even java applets that will help you adjust it.

But if it is just this one video that has this brightness problem, is it still his monitor?

Well I changed priority for DirectShow to higher priority and still getting "can't open or unsupported" error message. I can open this mpeg2 file in authoring programs like TMPGenc DVD Author though, which means that the file itself should be ok.

I watched the movie on TV through the camera and it was too dark. The reason is that the movie was shot in a pretty dark room.

Actually I did it in two different ways: captured using Firewire and recorded to DVD-RAM disk using DMR E30 recorder and then transfered it to PC. Results are exactly the same.

When I was using the trial, it wouldn't let me open mpeg2's. The full verasion does. So, an assumption was made!

Do you have the Ligos encoder on your PC?I had the same problem when I had Sonic MyDVD and ArcSoft Showbiz loaded on my PC,I had to manually remove in Explorer and Regedit.Ligos also disabled "Smart Render" in VideoStudio.Also make sure you d/l "m2v.vfp" for TMPGEnc.

Ya know, Even if you figure out how to edit this, I'm not sure how much detail you are going to see if the room was too dark for the camera. What makes you think there is much to brighten up?

This may be a silly idea, but If you play it and adjust the white/black balance on your TV, you might get an idea of what you have.

It's just that dark rooms and dv cams don't sound like a good combination.

Well, I solved the problem by installing mpeg2 plugin m2v.vfp for TMPGEnc. Now it loads mpeg2 files just fine.
