  1. I just authored a dvd with full NTSC D1 resolution menu and intro movie using dvdlab 1.1. The two movies I put on the dvd are both NTSC SVCD format (480x480) and with 48khz audio.. the svcd movies were encoded with dvd2svcd (cce). Quality is 2500CBR with 224kbps audio.

So to the problem; on my standalone (panasonic) player playback sometimes skips/freezes for a split second now and then (not randomly but on the same occations every time). Though when played on the computer it looks fine. What could be the problem? I live in sweden (PAL area), so one might think it is some compability issue but would it then be playable at all? Or is the problem with the disc or the standalone player (but would it occur always on the same points of time then).. annoying as hell it is

if you have any idea pls let me know

    thanks!

    /Matt

  2. Not all stand alones will play incorrect format dvd's, so I'm sure that is your problem.

I think it actually tells you that somewhere in dvdlab.

Don't rule out media. You computers DVD player tends to have a better quality pickup laser than a standalone player. What is marginal on you PC doesn't work (skips) on a standalone player. Try it on another standalone player and see if it's "in the same spot". Trya a different disk on a 1x burn.

I don't mean to steal the thread, but I think I have a similiar problem. What is the best way to take a 480x480 file and author to DVD at 720x480 ? In TMPGEnc do a center with custom specs and shrink the viewable area ? Any good rules to follow ?

  5. Now Ive tested a zillion resolutions and tried converting from ntsc->pal and so on etc etc.. Strangely it looks like the audio is causing the skips.. Even if I burn at svcd res 480x480 ntsc it works fine if I burn the mpv (no audio..).. But as soon as I add audio the same fault appears. The audio I have used so far is mp2 48khz CBR 224kbps stereo error protected... So as Im writing this Im burning wav PCM as audio source. One could also think it is the bitrate that is becoming too high.. It shouldnt be a prob (2520kbps is the limit with 224kbps audio i believe) but one can always try lower and test. Or else it might work better with 44khz audio. (which really shouldnt work at all on a dvd tho). What does it mean that the mp2 is error protected btw? does it have some extra crc like info that hypothetically could cause image to flick when read.. ?

If I'm not mistaken, MP2 isn't a DVD audio standard. PCM or AC3 are DVD spec., that could be your problem

  7. nope the same happened with PCM audio. However, I hadnt given this a lot of thought til now; the skips might be due to the fact that virtualdub complains about the vbr audio used in the divx im converting in dvd2svcd.. theres a chance anyway.. Im converting a divx movie with legal vbr audio now so Im gonna see how it goes. also im gonna test converting the audio in the "old" movie to cbr in vdub (yes it'll be desynced but thats not the point), and see if the same happens.. uhh thats some new ideas anyway

  8. Anyway,, I just wanted to report that Ive seem to have found the problem. Dvd-lab that I was using simply doesnt seem to produce very dvd compliant ifo/vobs.. I tried IFOEdit now and it works like a charm.

no... just your player seems to like ifoedit. dvd-lab is just as compliant as other players like it better.

even one of the current guides caution about ifoedit not being 100% compliant:

  10. well its strange.. anyway Ive noticed that I can get to use dvd-lab if i make the vobs in ifoedit and import them in dvd-lab.. the movies doesnt get messed up (to my player at least) by dvd-labs muxing then..
