I'm about to burn my first ever VCD...
I've followed the AVI 2 MPG guide and with the trouble-shooting bits it has worked a treat.
But now I'm at the very last hurdle and when I click on WRITE after setting the speed, 'finalise CD' etc Nero brings up the burning stats window then ejects the drive and says that the CD isn't writable - of course it's writable, I've just taken it out of it's wrapper - I've tried this with 3 brand new Philips CD-R80 48x CDs...You can view the status of the CD before you start and Nero confirms it is a new empty CD...
HELP!

Hi - Nero version is 5.1.1.8 and I've applied what I believe is the MPEG2-SVCD Plug-in since installing (and have rebooted since patching too).
The error pops up just as the burn should be starting in a window titled "HP CD-Writer+ 7500:Waiting for CD" and says "This CD is not writable. Please insert a writable CD..."
thanks

Hmm. I was just reading on Nero.com, and it was saying that your drive is only supported up to 24x. Have you tried setting the burn speed to a lower setting, something like 12x? Or even 4x? Because you said when you check the CD before you start burning Nero says the CD is empty... My thought is try the easiest thing first
While you give this a try, let me think about it a little more...

You should always burn on 4x or 2x speed for the best qulity.
When you burn on high speed it will give you problems. Skip, sound, crash etc. -
I usually burn at the highest speed I can, and I've never had problems (with skipping, sound, etc.), even burning at 16x, and 32x. And I've burned (X)VCDs, (X)SVCDs, and CVDs. So I'm not sure that is always true

OK Guys - here's the latest...
Firstly my external HP CD-Writer 7500+ only gives me the option of burning at 1x or 2x so speed isn't the issue. I also have the latest drivers for the writer.
I have just uninstalled Nero and gone up to Nero 6.0.0.0 and now get a slightly more helpful error. After the original error the window also says "Disc required for the compiliation: CD-R/RW, Disc type in the recorder: CD-R"
!!!!! This CAN'T be right...surely you can burn a VCD onto a CD-R and not just onto a CD-RW...
EDIT: I've just tried to burn a normal data cd and I'm getting the same message - I'm using Philips CDR-80 48x CD-Rs....
So is Nero just not happy with my choice of CD-R or does it only like CD-RWs?
thanks

Quick question. Are the Philips CD-R80 48x CDs labeled as Data or Music CDs? When doing VCDs make sure you use Data CDs.
-
Neither - just 'up to 48x multispeed 80min/700mb'...'superior data integrity and reliability through advanced cd-r technology'...
yeah, right.

Sounds like you have crappy media to me. Try some different media.
-
How old is a HP 7500+? Do you have problems with other media brands? Have ever used 80 min CD-R's in this drive before? I realize everybody and their brother sells 80 min CD-R's, but I had an old Phillips drive that didn't like 80 min cd-r's until after a firmware upgrade. Up until then, it would only burn to 74 min discs.

I've successfully burnt a data CD onto one of the same CDs using Adaptec...Nero is currently the only burning software on my PC.
Noted though.
