OK, DVD Shrink should work for you with the majority of DVDs. Occassionally you will tackle one that refuses to rip well. You should not be having any problems with playback. It might be something as simple as a media / player / burner program issue. DVD shrink only creates a set of decrypted files which are visual exactly the same as if when you open the disks contents using your Windows Explorer. The only diference is that they are now not protected against copying.
Assuming the movie was copied without any compression, it should be a bit for bit copy. I assume you have become familiar with the use of the"Author" mode. Here you open the 2nd window. Going back to the 1st window youo selet and open the main movie and drag the file over to the 2nd or AUTHOR window. There you will see the various Aduio files and such. Uncheck what youo do not want. I usually leav the 6 channel english and the english subs. If after doing so, I still have a file that exceeds the limit ( will show as RED ) I choose the compression I need to bring it all to green. If you already know how to do this I apologize.
After backinig up to a folder of your choice, I use NERO burn, the older version 5-5-10-50 works best for me. Use the Wizard and chooce DVD / New / Other format / DVD/Movie. The prog will create to folders - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. Must be all caps. Drag the files that shirnk created into and inside the VIDEO_TS folder that was created by NERO.
Click on burn and DO NOT USE your computer for anything during the burn. I would even disable any anti virus software during the burn. You do not want anything disrupting the write process. The disk will FINALIZE and then you ought to be able to play it on most machines.
After this long winded explanation, I would ask you if you have tried the movies you backed up on any other players and if you were getting the same playback problems. I have 7 DVD players at home ( hard to believe!! ) and I can get most of them to play all my movies that I back up. MOST of the time it is a media or player problem.

    Hope this helps
    Take care
