Don't use Xvid. Try using the HuffyUV codec or the PICVideo MJPG codec (with the setting on either 20 or 19 but no lower than that).

Even with a fast computer it takes a lot of processing power to capture direct to Xvid or DivX. Better to use something that works faster (such as the two codec's listed above) and then AFTER you capture you can convert the capture to Xvid or DivX or whatever you want.

Your computer is more than fast enough HOWEVER you might want to consider getting a second 80GB or larger HDD for use in capturing as captured files in HuffyUV are rather LARGE and even the PICVideo MJPG codec can make large files. For instance I just captured a 2 hour TV cable program using PICVideo MJPG at the 19 setting using half D1 resolution (352x480 29.970fps NTSC) and the file size but just over 13GB but it would have been even LARGER had I done full D1 (720x480) so having a 2nd HDD really comes in handy.

Also you might want to try VirtualVCR. At first I liked iuVCR better but after playing around with both I actually like the way VirtualVCR can keep synch using the RESAMPLE AUDIO method. I like it better now than iuVCR in-so-far as keeping synch. As a plus VirtualVCR is free.

The HuffyUV codec is also free. The PICVideo MJPG codec takes less space for the capture than HuffyUV (especially at the 19 quality setting) but it costs like $28 to register it.

You might want to take a look at the CAPTURE guides on this website. There is a guide on how to use HuffyUV and PICVideo MJPG to capture although the guide uses VirtualDub which is not a good option for many (most) WinXP users since WinXP uses WDM capture drivers and VirtualDub uses VFW drivers and of course getting VFW to work under WinXP is one hell of a trick (I tried and gave up myself and I like to think that I have excellent computer skills).
