So know that Indy 4 will be on Bluray will the original trilogy be released in Bluray?

In a similar thread has there been ANY movement on getting Star Wars on Bluray?

I can't imagine what the wait would be for now. Since the death of HDDVD it would seem to be a logical push. I"m also waiting for Lord of the Rings on Bluray. Granted my LOTR discs do look good on my hdtv I just know true bluray discs would look that much better......

Peter Jackson is supposed to be working on LOTR Blu-ray right now, but it won't be available until 2009.

According to a rumor I read, an Indy Blu-ray "quadrilogy" might be in the works too. Lucas will likely suck up every nickel he can from the upcoming release before decides to sell a Blu-ray "quadrilogy," though.

Star Wars? I know he wants to re-master them in 3D, but I haven't read a thing about Blu-ray. I suspect he'll come out with Star Wars 3D DVDs first (if possible). Then, later on, come out with Star Wars 3D Blu-ray versions.

If there's a way to repackage his stuff, Lucas will find a way to do it. But you already know that.

A complete collection is in the works which will include the original trilogy as well as the new installment.

You can see the writing on the wall here. They are releasing Indy 4 now and letting it sell as much as it can, then they will release the trilogy in blu ray only in a complete collection. That way if you bought Indy 4 in DVD or Blu ray, the only way you can get the original trilogy in blu ray is to buy Indy 4 all over again. Tricky, but smart and a tried and true tactic.

No movement on Star Wars. The last press release from Lucas was early 2007 and all he said was that there were no blu ray editions in the works.

Peter Jackson confirmed in an interview that he is currently working on a blu ray release of the LOTR trilogy.

I may purchase Indy trilogy on Blu-Ray when available, but Indy 4 was a disappointment, so its going to be a miss.

LOTR is on my Blu-Ray list, but no doubt they will first release the standard versions for maximum profit before releasing the extended editions.

    Thanks everyone for the input...

@waheed - I hadn't thought about the extended version theatrical issue for bluray. That would suck if they'd make you wait 6 months or a year before releasing the extended editions.

However since I own extended edition dvds I might be tempted to skip the extended and go for the theatrical on bluray. I don't need all the bonus stuff remastered in bluray which it probably wouldn't be anyway.

Too bad on Star Wars though. I'd love to buy the septology (what is a six pack caled anyhow?) on bluray.

    Yoda,

I just read an article about 3D on Blu-ray. Even though there have been a few 3D releases, the Blu-ray folks haven't officially endorsed a particular system. One system (by Samsung) doesn't require funky glasses, but it does require a special TV. Samsung says their 3D system could be incorporated into all future TVs within the next 3 years, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    BUMP

Just curious about the status of STAR WARS on bluray.

I rented CLONE WARS on bluray and it looks very good. The interesting thing is that during the documentaries (yes the cartoon has documentaries, this is a lucasfilm production afterall, did you expect anything less?) it had clips of the original trilogy.

The clips "appeared" to be pure high def not upconverted. Now there were deleted scenes on the disc and those were 480p and clearly looked it. Now the star wars clips were incorporated into the documentaries so they wouldn't pop up as less than 1080i (my set is a 720p capable of 1366x768).

Is it possible that the ENTIRE STAR WARS SAGA is already encoded to 1080p? Is Lucas just waiting for the right time to pop into the public arena in high def?

EDIT - by the way I also rented INDY 4 on the same day and it looks very good in high def. AND the same scenario happened. The one docu I watched had clips of the original trilogy in it. They looked darn good and I'm curious if they are already transferred to 1080p.

Could this be the case? Or is it more likely lucasfilm has just transfered a select number of clips to high def for just these occasions and waiting for the full plunge when given the green light?

1080p? They are stored at much higher resolutions than that. The original trilogy was completely digitally remastered. They could pop off a blu-ray of all the Star Wars films in no time.

Beyond a stellar DVD, Lucasfilm now has a high-definition master stored in its vaults that won't degrade as celluloid does. The master can be used to make new film prints and high-definition DVDs.

Thanks adam! That sounds great. Now we need to get a petition going for them to be released on Bluray just like they did for the dvd release.

My suspicions are confirmed for LOTR blu-ray release. According to Blu-Ray.com, the theatrical versions will be released first, and the extended editions will not be released until the theatrical release of 'The Hobbit'.
