Listen, what a great site! I hope ya'll can help. I"m working off a 386 with an external CD-ROM drive I was able to connect with a couple of phone lines. Anyway, I'm trying to rip "Thirteen Days" - Kriterian Edition, and I'm having all kinds off problems. The CD-ROM drive won't read the DVD; what gives? It just keeps spinning and then an error message comes up. What do I need to do? Also, how does a DOS program figure into the ripping formats? I heard you need to go "C:// DVD Ripping.//." Will that bring about the right prompts? It's not working for me. Finally, what the hell is MPEG and TEMPEG or something like that? Let's stop with all the abbreviations and write some shit out! I don't have online capability right now, so I'm using the computers at the library. I'll check the replys when I'm off again mid next week. Thanks for all the help.

you cant ripped dvds with a cdrom drive, you need a dvdrom drive... mpeg is the format that vcds use... tmpgenc is the most popular program to encode to mpeg. as for dos ripping... who knows... upgrade from a 386... that would take you like 8 days to rip a dvd even if you could get it started.

You can't rip dvd using a cd-rom (they are different technologies). Secondly, a 386 is way too slow to do the kinds of conversions using the tools provided on this website. Finally, if you have a 386, it's likely that your hard drive is way too small to rip a small section of what's on a dvd to even do a conversion.
My suggestion. Save your money and either build yourself a better computer or buy yourself an affordable computer (if you lack the techno savy) and then come back to this site. Much of what you see won't make sense without the hands on experience of good old fashioned trial and error. -
What part of CEEEE-DEEEE rom is confusing you???
I suggest you research the definitions of CD & DVD. -
Hey Kdiddy, listen *******, I'm just trying to get some help here, no need to toss out smart-ass replys. There is no difference between a CD verses a DVD verses a VCD. What defines one from the other is how it is used. For example, if I were to take my "Perfect Storm" disc and put it in my DVD player to watch it, it would be called a DVD. But, if were to stick the same disc in my car CD player, it would be a CD, and I would listen the beautiful score by John Williams. As far as a VCD goes, that phrase is largely interchangable with DVD, some just perfer to call them VCD's instead of DVD's. Furthermore, and a bit easier to do, just simply turn over the disc's to your favorite movie, band, or CD-ROM program and compare... they each will look about the same. The reason being... because they are the same. So in answer to your question "What part of CEEEE-DEEEE rom is confusing you???" Ummm, nothing. Obviously, it is you that seems not to have a clue. If anyone can help with with my original question or offer any HELPFUL suggestions, please do so... Thanks

I'm afraid the condescending nature of the reply was in poor taste, but the general nature of the post is correct. A cd rom will not play dvd. They are different, very different technologies and unfortunately dvd is not going to work in a cd player. In fact, place the dvd in a cd player and you'll likely get loud screeching noises.
Anyway, to make a short story long, buy a dvd rom. If you want to spend the least amount of money. But a 386 won't work - at least the time spent making it work would be better spent upgrading. -
bjjimmyjones,
Kdiddy is complete correct. The only similarity between a CD and a DVD is that they are both optical media on a 12 cm diameter disc. CD and DVDs are different technologies and require different hardware to read.
A DVD disc WILL NOT EVER play in a CD drive. DVD drives are however backward compatible with CDs so DVD drives will read CDs.
Furthermore, do not attack someone when your own knowledge is very incorrect. I'm very sorry but you've just shown your own ignorance in a very demonstrative way. A VCD is not a DVD. They are definitely NOT interchangable and are completely different things.
Regards.

Looky here jimmy boy....first, don't get upset, like Forrest says "stupid is as stupid does"....secondly, you could have saved yourself the sarcasm by doing a SEARCH ( hmm what a novel idea) in this very same forum on this topic, to see others (who like you, didn't use simple logic) have posted the very SAME question before...then, you need to read up on your CD definitions and LEARN that all the above crap you stated is WRONG.

Not hardly, if they were the same dumba$$, then WHY THE NEED for DVD-ROM to play the A DVD disk hmmm??? if they were the same then a CD-ROM would read a DVD disk...thus you need to educate yourself with the provided links below:

That is simply demostrating the MULTIREAD capability of your car's drive and multi-AUTHORING capability of a DVD disk...NOT an example of the disks being the same, see link below:

Again lets use simple logic, if they were interchangeble, why even use 2 names??..why because they ARE NOT the same. VCD is name representative of an AUTHORING FORMAT not physical media, the same with SVCD, you can either read on this website in the BIG BLUE category over to YOUR LEFT or go here: http://www.cdrinfo.com/articles/videocd/index.shtml
However, DVD is confusing, because DVD can be used to represent both an authoring process & physical media. Check out the miniDVD section this website to see what I mean. MiniDVD is an audio/video file AUTHORED like DVD information, but BURN on the physical media of CDR(W)s.
Dismiss, class is now over.

Kiddy, you're my kind!! LOL, cant believe the stupidity of some people. Sorry pal, but if you dont know the difference between a CD and DVD, you really don't belong here. And if you're on a 386 you need to be in 1990...wait!! are you from the past??? Just kidding you, but do somehomework and don't waste these peoples time...And I thought I was a newbie to dvdripping
-
i dont think to say that he doesnt belong here is quite correct. he is obviously new to DVD ripping and doesnt understand lots of things, but dont say he is stupid because of his knowledge of DVDs and CDs. but the fact that he started mouthing off at people when he was completely incorrect is not right.
