  1. Hello. Would anyone know why my unit will not power up? After the power went out yesterday due to the entire region being out in New York, I unplugged all of my major appliances, including my DVD Recorder. After power was restored, the unit will not power up (it's been about 4 hours now). I tried another outlet with the same result.

I just purchased the unit 2 weeks ago and had a similiar problem about 5 days ago where I mistakenly turned off the surge protector powering my DVD Recorder. It took about an hour for it to power back on.

Unfortunately, the local store where I purchased the unit from will only exchange or refund for store credit within 7 days of purchase. After this, I have to take it into their repair shop which could take weeks. I really don't want to go that route.

Just wondering if the unit goes into a safemode during a loss of power and what needs to be done to restore it. Please let me know. Thanks everyone.

  2. What happens is that when they turn the power back on there is a huge power surge coming through your outlets. Thats why they suggest that you UNPLUG anything BEFORE the power is restored.

Your machine is under guarantee so why not use that? THe only other option is unplug it from wall for more than a full minute & then plug back in as this resets all appliances.

  3. Thanks Handyguy, but I did unplug the recorder before the power came on. Using the guarantee will tie me up for a few weeks while the recorder is in the shop. I've had it unplugged for about 5 hours now. I'll try and plug it in when I get home and hopefully it powers up. I'll let everyone know.

  4. I also have the DMR-E50 and unplugged it when the power went out. I live in Woodbridge, Ontario CANADA and when the power was restored in the wee hours of the morning, around 2am I didnt bother plugging it back in. I plugged it back in around 10am when I woke up and it worked fine. I think yours might have fried, I hope not but it looks so, good luck

I got the dmre20 and about a month ago there was a surge so the video output got fried i sent it to [ Panasonic Factory Service 2221 Cabot Blvd. west Langhorne PA 19047 ..Tel # 215-741-0661] I sent it out on a friday with a copy of my bill and got it back the next thursday they replaced the unit free and it was still under warranty .So I suggest you send it to them and they will fix it for free or replace it . Call them and ask them what to do,also call the toll free number in your operating manual on the last page .I hope this helps..

  6. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. The unit finally powered up this afternoon. I have a number of recordings to do this weekend and I plan on taking it to the shop on Monday. It's under full warranty.

  7. Whew good to hear that. I have the E50s and was a bit concerned. I did however pay for the extended two year warranty at CircuitCity.

  9. Yes, it powered up AOK. I'm relieved and tranferred about 10 videos to DVD. I still plan on taking the unit into the shop very soon though. Thanks again everyone!
