If I have a 450 MB MPG and put it on a DVD using some authoring program, should I expect it to take up 450 MB of space on the DVD itself?? The reason I ask is because I try this and the MPG takes up 2 GB of space rather than 450 MB. Is this normal??

File is of your encoded MPEG is ONLY dependant on two factors:
runtime & bitrate
the size of the source, resolution of the source, resolution of the encoded MPEG, codec used for the source, etc. has ZERO effect on file size.
If you set the bitrate at 1150kbit/s (eg. VCD whitebook) and your source is 30min long (ie. 1800secs) just multiple bitrate x runtime = file size.
To make life easier you can use a bitrate calculator (look to the left under tools, the DVDRHELP.COM java one is good enough). -
No that's not normal IF your mpeg is already DVD compliant.
What authoring program ?
Is it taking hours to process ?
If it is it may be re-encoding at a higher bitrate than your original. -
