I have done a lot of reading on transcoding video to FLV, as well as much transcoding, and I have a question that I hope someone can answer:
How is the final FLV filesize related to the transcoding settings? For example:
I transcoded a 9mins 15 second VOB file (MPG file) at the following settings using Flix On2 Standard:
-Max Video kbps = 800
-Audio = 64kbps
- resolution = 640x480
- Framses/second = 15
- Key Frame = 60 frames (every 4 seconds)
The final size is 60MB, yet I thought it would have been much smaller. Here's my math:
864kbps x 60secs x 9mins = 46,650kb or around 47 Mbits
And those are bits, not BYTES. What is causing the extra file size? Is it the actual images that are snapshotted every 4 seconds that are padding the file size? It seems strange that the setting from within Flix (amd Macromedia Flash Ecoder) would say Max 512kbps, and the finished file size per kbps is clearly larger than 512kbps.
Thanks!

You are calculating wrong. You must divide by 8 to get it in bytes and not bits. Or use a video bitrate calculator (see our tools section).
864 * 60 * 9 = 466560 / 8 = 58320kbytes = around 60Mbytes. -

Thanks a lot for the math lesson, and for your time.
