I have an Artec 16X DVD-ROM and the fastest I can get it to rip is 2.1X with DVD decrypter. My Optorite DD0203 rips at 4.3X on the same disc and I have read that most DVD-ROM drives rip faster than burners (also read about others with Artec drives that rip 7-8X). I don't know what the problem is, I don't want to use my burner to rip and burn because I don't want to put too much wear on it (the only reason I have it is for ripping). I know I am in DMA mode, I have the latest firmware I could find, I have searched a lot of places and haven't found anything that works.

I just want my Artec to rip faster!

For fastest ripping, I suggest a Pioneer or Sony.
    Avoid LG, Panasonic, Toshiba.

I actually ordered a Lite-On as soon as I discovered that I was ripping so slow compared to others, but I canceled my order before it shipped to see if I could get my current drive to work better.

Did you try to delete the IDE controller for your DVD-Rom and restarting the computer. I unlocked my drive from 2x rip speeds when I did it.

  8. I, too, tried to reinstall the IDE controllers, but no cigar. I know people have suggested that I buy an external DVD-ROM drive and a USB enclosure for it, and use that to rip. But that costs about $80-$100, and I would like to find a cheaper alternative.

    Can anyone help?

  10. Just get the Lite-on for $30-40 and save youself a whole lot of hassle -- it is totally worth it for ripping...
