DivX 5 movie is weird

I have a movie that Virtual Dub says is DivX 5.0 encoded, but it won't play in any player, including the DivX alpha 2 player. In VDub it displays as black until I hit any key, such as the keyframes key, at which point it displays a beautiful still frame. By stopping playback, I can get a flawless still frame at any point, but the video will not display frames continuously, that is, normally. The sound is fine. I'm stumped.
