As this is off topic, has anyone ever had, or does anyone know what in the hell can cause ALL the Icons, Desktop, Folder, File, to turn into a block if what looks like leafy hedge, some of which more or less have the outline of the old icons, for instance, a folder icon looks like a leafy icon?
I have run a trojan hunter, latest Norton AV, done the Norton on line virus search, Ad-aware, Spybot, everything.
I am just about ready to wipe and re-install.
Anyone knows what this is, please respond.
Cheers,
George

Shocker,
I hope I am UL'ing it now, bear with me if it doesn't show. Never done this before, but the directions below seem clear.
I am at a loss as to what the heck this can be. Started, I think, 2 days ago.
Here should be the clip.

Is it getting worse
-
Shocker,
They're kinda small, here's a smaller part, sized up.
Note the Recycle Bin is normal, and Smartripper only has a few leaves, why, I don't know.
BTW, I locked up trying to tell you, last night that PC2100 is more like 50 for 256 meg at CompUSA.

Your icons got corrupted (duh!). Try right-clicking on the non-windows ones and select properties/change icon and select the normal icon. For the windows ones, you might have to just delete it and go to the file location, right-click on it and select send-to desktop (create shortcut).
Did you try right-clicking on an empty area on the screen and selecting "refresh"?ICBM target coordinates:

Craig,
I know, now! Only just realized there were such things on a KB, never had to use them before.
I don't think you can say it's getting worse. Every single file and folder, with the exception of the RBin and SmartRipper, has sprouted greenery.
I gotta amend that. Just did some browsing. Certain executables, some iso DL's, Linux files, are unchanged, almost everything else, all my pics, whatever format, looks like shrubbery, a blob of it, but if I click it once, it changes form, to a dog-eared page of leaves, shaped now as a PSP image icon would. Some others go round, as a Netscape image icon would look, normally.
I have re-installed, without a wipe, no good, afraid if I do wipe, they'll be unopenable.
Ah, well.
Any help, greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

SLK,
Duh, yeah I did try to refresh, you see the result above, same-same.
When I run virus scan, it reports some 150,000 files, a few too many to try deciding what Icon belongs to what file type. Hell, a lot of them I don't even know the proper association.
Since all the drives are like this, think I'm gonna pull one, see if it's the same in the other machine.
BTW, change icon shows me the right icon, and change doesn't help, still the same.
Duh, which way does George go, now?

looks like a video card problem.
its a voodooright?
dont overclock.(computer and video card)
check display properties and change color quality.
play with the hardware acceleration.
uninstall video card and reinstall drivers.
see if any of that helps. -
Zodiac,
I'll try that, but don't think so. If I go to the change icon app, those icons I don't have anything associated with are normal. Only those on my computer have the shrubs as icon. I'd think the rest would look the same if it were a video problem.
I haven't o'clocked in years. No real need, machines are too fast to worry about another couple hundred mhz, sooner buy faster, now.
I'll try it anyhow. Thanks.

That looks like a video card driver that just ran South. I'd try reinstalling and/or updating the drives first...

This happened to a laptop of mine; not the leafy effect but the text width problems. I think I reinstalled the video drivers like other people are telling you. Make sure the moniter properties say 16-bit or higher, too.
BTW, as for memory, I'm gonna go to ebay where 512 pc2100 is ~$50. -
Shocker,

Good idea on the RAM.
I thought someone had beat me to the resolution of my problem. Did a search, MS Support.
Somehow C:\Win\Shell Icon cache folder got damaged, MS said to reboot in Safe Mode, Remove the folder, reboot.
Did so, all's well.
If you ever need to do a search on MS, change the returns to a higher number than the default 25, it doesn't let you check the next 25, new search req'd. My fix was about 35 or 40.
Thanks to all who responded.
Cheers,
George
