so my system went cookoo somehow, and between analizing and fixing, i lost yet another graphics card and now i'm on my systems main board graphics card. at least it works well, running at 1440x900 which is what i last had it at on my 2nd purchased ati 4350 card. any cards with fans never last long, this one was 8 months. anyway.

so my icons (or associations) got screwed in the process of this system crash. they are all that basic white color.

how do i get restore all my icons images ?

the desktop and folders are affected as well. even control panel is white.

    thank you.

Rebuild iconcache.db located C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\ ... delete file then open task manager and kill windows explorer ...then use task manager to relaunch windows explorer ... the icon cache will be rebuilt.

use os disc and run "sfc /scannow" from run command to verify system files.

Panels it could be a little more serious ... try changing windows theme or create a new user account, log off then into new account ... if problem resolved then the fault is with user account corruption ... transfer user files and delete damaged account.

If problem remains backup data and reload from backup image ... or reload the os again.

The icon cache is toast - this is how to rebuild in win7 - don't know if it works for older versions.

    1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.

    2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe

    3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process

    4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.

    5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)

    6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK

    7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:

    CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    DEL IconCache.db /a
    EXIT

    8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)

    9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.

    Your icons should return.
