  1. I'm trying to copy a foreign movie from a DVD9 to a single DVD-R. As the movie is 5.5 gigs, it needs to be compressed. I used DVD Shrink 2.3 (in Re-author mode) to compress the movie by 20%, and I removed the menus, extras, and the unneeded audio tracks.

After burning, the DVD-R works fine, except that it refuses to play the subtitles in DVD players. The subtitles show up in the players' menus, but they will not show up on screen. Oddly enough, the subtitles work just fine in every DVD-ROM drive I've tried.

I tried burning another copy in Full Disk mode, leaving all the menus and extras on the disc and compressing the movie by 30%. I can select the subtitles from the DVD menu or the players' menus, but it still won't show up on screen.

I'm assuming that playing back compressed movies is handled differently for DVD players than it is for DVD-ROM drives, hence my problem.

Does anyone know of a relatively simple way to create the DVD-R where the subtitles will work in DVD players?

  2. try the DVD in another standalone dvd player..and c if you can get the subtitles to show up.

and no, there's no difference in playing "compressed" DVDs in PC vs. standalone...because neither can tell the difference....to both of them, they just think you're playing another DVD5.

  3. I've tried both burned discs in four different brand DVD players, and three different brand DVD-ROM drives. The results were consistent; subtitles don't display on the players and do display on the drives.

For the record, the original DVD9 disc's subtitles work fine on all the players and drives.

is your dvd player the same region as that of the foreign DVD??

  5. Yes, the DVD and all the players are region 1. The burned discs I made are region free.
