I was wondering....can you use mp3 audio on a vcd instead of mp2 or mp1? and if so, will it take more or less space on a cd than a vcd with mp2 audio?

The audio and video have to be a certain standard in order for the disc to be a VCD, and I don't believe that MP3 is one of the allowable audio formats.

VCD audio must be mp2 and 44.1khz,the bitrate can vary if your player supports it(XVCD).

thanks for the info........now my next question is......is there any way to fit a 90min vcd movie on one cdr and still have decent quality????? i've seen it posted on here before but now i can't find it? Somebody help me if possible

You could use a 90/99min CD-r if your writer and player support them. Here's the guide you were looking for:https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgencxvcd.htm

using standard VCD specs (1150 kbit/s CBR, 224 kbit/s MPEG-1 Layer II audio, etc...) you will be able to fit 80 min. of video onto a 80 min CD-R.
if you wanna fit more, you will have to deviate from standard specs...then, you will be making a non-standard, compliant xVCD, with a lower dvd player compatibility than standard VCD.
may wanna check first to see if your player supports xVCDs: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers -
first try to lower audio quality ( you might go even to 96-112 ) and then try to lower video quality. if you are not perfectionist, you could fit app 100-105 minutes with acceptable quality.

or use kvcd templates from kvcd.net i've been using it for a while and i love the results.
