  1. I know i will probably get flamed for even bringing up a conversion to the evil empires software, but a freind of mine is looking to convert some stuff to wmv and she is alos on a mac. I was just wondering if this conversion is possible in native OS X, or if i have to go to VPC to do this.

    Thanks in advance

im not going to flame you.. but why in gods name does she want to encode to wmv???? if she wants streaming video or to make it smaller just go with quicktime.. but if she MUST go with the utter utter CRAP that is wmv cleaner can do it... but then again that bloated piece of crap software costs 500-600$ (no where near worth even 100$ if you ask me) but honestly if she is just doing it for streaming purposes, stir her in a direction that doesnt suck, for her own benefit as well as whoever is going to be viewing it.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine

Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

I also needed to convert to wmv - since various members of my family, and my wife's, run Windoze - and aren't comfortable (or competent enough) to install Quicktime on their peecees. They just surf web and use e-mail. Installers on peecees ask too many technical questions (for them). <sigh>. And they're not local - so I can't do it for them.

I've done conversion, using Cleaner - but it was VERY painful on my dual 450-Mhz G4 => 30-minutes of video from Final Cut Express took over 4-hours to convert. Too painful for me! I'll be sending VHS tapes while I save-up for a DVD-burner.

first edit: I initially stated it took 4-hours to convert 16-minutes. On reflection, I believe it was a ~30-minute clip. I have it stuck in my mind, that there was an 8-to-1 ratio at that length of clip, and for that particular conversion (DV to large .wmv download), on my machine. YMMV.
