Creating Subtitle VCDs have been a challenge for me for several weeks now. After creating the ssa subtitle file, TMPGEnc would not open a *.vdr file while frameserving in VirtualDub.
After a long trial and error process, I abandoned frame serving in favor VOBsub.

This process fair better results, yet introduced other inconsistencies which included random dropping of subtitles. So some text titles appeared on the mpeg while others did not when the actual sub file had the text. Let me know if somebody know how to deal with this situation.
In addition, the configuration settings for font and color automatically reset before playing a video file. I would like to create a configuration file, *.idx, which will help maintain the style setting relating to *.sub files. Let me know how one could set fonts and color in a *.sub file; and what tools do you need to edit these files?
