Ive been doing vcd conversions for a while and decided to try DVD. With alotta help from this site things have gone been pretty well. The problem Im running into is how the movie files are been copied using Nero 5.5.10.35.
I have several DVD players Im testing these backups on with different results, for instance: If I use DVD udf this works on my Toshiba and Sony Players but not a 3rd Sony(different model) or on an Apex 1200. If I make a DVD using DVDvideo they will play in the Apex but not the Toshiba. My question is,is this normal or will this be something Ill need to make notes and do differently for each player or am doing something wrong. Ive followed the guides to the letter. The other programs I use are Instant copy 7 DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink ( I like the best) and Smartripper. Does everyone have to find their own combination to make it work for them.

Try this method(It has never failed on any DVD player)

Once you have your VIDEO and AUDIO folders from DVD shrink(or what ever program you used)

Create an ISO file using Imgtool classic and Burn using DVD decrypter.

I will be suprised if this does not play on all your players...

Ghosty... ths sounds exciting. I have experienced the same probs as the poster, and so far have just been trying to remember when to write in 1.02 & 1.05 (using Nero). I frequently forget though and this p*sses me off. Can you prvide a link where I can get that software you mentioned? and can you elaborate a little on creating an ISO file?? what do you have to call the file, whats in the file etc?

A mate of mine recons Clone DVD will write vobs to the disc and it will play back in any player... can anyone back him up on his claims??

  5. After creating my VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, I burn with Veritas RecordNow and it has worked every time, no coasters. I have used this method ~200 times.

    just my method.

It's not Nero or your software.

It's the discs's you're using and the spec of your players.

There's not one brand of DVDR's that's guaranteed to play on every DVD player.
A Princo -R cannot be compared with a Pioneer -R.

Try Verbatim or Pioneer DVDR media. More expensive, for a good reason.

PS: Newer players don't necessarily handle DVDR's better than older players.
If one Sony plays DVDR it doesn't mean that ALL Sony's do that.

  7. No no no. Vance and Ghosty 6 are on the right track. I have always tried to remember which players require the disc to be done in UDF1.02 (Nero DVD Rom Iso mode) and which ones to do in UDF1.05 (Nero DVD Video mode).

Trouble is, I couldnt always remember. I have found that Ghosty 6 method of creating an Iso image using Img tool classic works on all players when burned using DVD Decrypter. I always use Rytek Dye discs or Yellow Datawrites if I am feeling cheap, bet Never ever Red 4x Datawrite, Grey 2x datawrite nor Tango Bulk Paq. Sh*t in, sh*t out!!

My burning software of choice is Alcohol 120%. I like the graphs, and the fact that you can mount the image as if it were a disc. which means if you wanted you could burn an Alcohol file using Nero or Prassi and you could still run it through DVD2One (my compression of choice).

The brilliant thing also about Alcohol is you can also use it to burn ISO images... so you dont have to use Dycrypter... but so far I have. No comebacks.

  8. No, no, no youself !

To the best of my knowledge, any DVD player that can handle DVD-R / +R is expecting UDF 1.02 or better. Some players will only handle 1.02, but if it will take 1.05 it should be backwardly compatible.

I have NEVER seen a UDF compatibility issue, but more crappy batches of media and authoring errors than you can shake a stick at.

It is very dangerous to knock everyone else's findings when they don't agree with your own - I'm sure most people here could mail you a disc that didn't work in their player but the same content and structure on a different brand did.

Media is still, and for the foreseeable future will be, an issue.

Thanks for all your help. Ive been experimenting a little with Nero and have found that udf/iso seems to work the best. All my players will play if recorded in this format, except one. The funny thing is the player reportedly plays all formats.+r,-r and rw. But so far I can only get it to recognize the +r media using the udf/iso burn option. I was able to burn a backup using -r media but I dont remember what format it was in.
The media Ive used so far are memorex, tdk, verbatium and imation. I threw alot of tdk away. The burner Im using is the optorite ddo203. Im thinking I might be burning to fast. Thanks again for all ur help

  11. I'm a little surprised you had so much grief with the TDK ones, assuming of course they were branded TDK and you weren'y going by the media code (which is notoriously variable and in the case of TDK, apparently hijacked by the likes of Princo).

If I have any probs with media I tend to hold on to them for data use, like storing my photos. Just because they don't work with my DVD player doesn't mean I've had to throw them away...

  12. my methods are close (and i've had similar probs with VIDEO_TS folders). depending on how i author it (not relevant to the convo) i generally end up with either a dvd directory (video_ts) or an .mpg and .ac3/.mp2 and if the latter, i try to run them thru an authoring program that will either make them into an .iso, or use Imgtool to convert the folders into an .iso file. i had BAD luck burning video folders into dvd with Nero, but nero burns my .iso files just fine. nero also does a good job of taking .mpeg2 files and just burning a compatible dvd disc.

my only issues have been USING dvd folders to burn into a disc, so according to what the others said, try to get them into an .iso file before burning, and then be sure to try burning to an +-rw first so you dont waste an -r.

    just an opinion

  13. I burn dvd images with nero, and dvd data folders (video / audio_ts) using DiscJuggler. I use Princo 1x (2x) discs and Princo 4x discs, and have made over 150 successful recordings, VERIFIED, with no errors whatsoever and they play on every player I can throw them in. Quite honestly, I've had more bad experiences with Pioneer and Verbatim media than I've had with Princos... If you've experienced "orange dye" on a Verbatim you know what I mean - otherwise be happy with what you use if it works for you.
