Editing would be like talking out commercials of something on TV, taking out/adding scenes, swaping audio and what not.
Authoring would be the process of putting all the pieces together and creating files suitable for burning/taping on your media of choice.
Example: DVD
You record/capture show X from TV and you edit out all the commercials, then merge all the relevant parts together in one file. You've edited the content.
Then, you create menus, and get all your video files together and run them through the authoring program. The authoring process creates the VOB, IFO, and BUP files that are formatted in a such a way that they conform to the DVD standard.
Don't know if this a good explanation or not, but hopefully you'll find it useful. -

Thanks for that, thats a good explanation.
I have palyed around with a couple of packages now (Pinnacle8,Ulead stuff, TMPengDVD author , PowerProducer etc.)
I'm now having a look at DVD lab, seems quite impressive for the price. it may be an overkill for what i want to do, but i reckon that it may not be around for long(its so good (so far)) for the price that it might be gobbled up by some bigger company.
Anyway have you (or any others ) tried this one.

Have tried DVD Workshop, NeoDVD & ReelDVD, DVD Lab beats them all for my purposes.
great program, great support, great forum in which the author participates, and amazing bang for the buck.- housepig

Hi Housepig,
Can you provide a link for the forum??
also
I dont seem to be able to achieve this with DVD Lab.
I want a main menu that has two pointers on it , each to a different movie.
But I dont want chapter menus at all with it. Is this possible??? Have you tried this???
cheers -
for the forum, click HERE
to do what you are doing, open a project. it should have one movie and one menu. go to Movie and add one more.
import your assets. drag your first movie to Movie 1, your second to Movie 2.
on your menu, write text : "Movie 1" and "Movie 2"
drag and drop a link from each movie to it's correct text.
there you go - a basic menu, 2 movies, no chapters.- housepig

Thanks Housepig for the compliment.
I too use DVD-Lab. A good place to start for authoring purposes in DVD-Lab is the help. Generally every function has some kind of tutorial or step by step walk though. It should take you long to get through what you are looking to do. -
Housepig,
I tried your method, that works as long as your movie file consists of only one file, but what if I have several files (vob) that I want to load as one track(movie)???
cheers -
check the instructions / help file in DVD Lab, and check the DVD Lab forum (linked in an earlier post).
I am authoring from captured video, so I haven't tried using vob files as media yet, so I can't really answer that. but I know plenty of people on this board do it, so if you can't find the answer in the DVD Lab forum, I would post a new topic with a subject like "How to use vob files in DVD Lab??"- housepig
