  1. Ok, So I was at the store the other day and I stumbled upon these 4 dvd players that I am considering purchasing one, yet I don't know which... Are these any good? I need VCD, DVDR, mp3 playback and good video quality and would like it to be PROGRESSIVE SCAN.

    1.) SONY DVPNS325/B $89.99
    2.) Samsung DVDP230 $78.88
    3.) Panasonic DVD-S35UP-5 $99.99
    4.) Toshiba SD-3900 $99.99

I personally own 3 of the Panasonic S35's. They have played everything I throw at them. I needed compatibility with SVCD's with menus, which the Sony couldn't handle. However, I have read where others have had some compatibility issues. If you can find a store that has them hooked up, do what I did....Take your written media down and try it on the various players. I took home the S35 and went back for 2 more. You should be able to purchase one now for less than the 99.99.

I'm a proud owner of the Panasonic S35 also.

The MP3 support is really nice. The folder view and navigation was well thought out, has a nifty find feature. The unit will also display CD Text.

It does play NTSC VCD, DVD-R (Princo 1x, Ritek G03, Samsung 4x, Optodisc 4x, Prime 4x, Prime 1x, TDK), MP3 VBR tested upto 320. No ID3 tag support. Couldn't get it to play MP3 on DVD-R. Plays DVD-RAM (VR mode only, not data nor ISO).

The Panasonic is also progressive scan.

There is no quality difference between this unit and any of my Apex players on a 27" and smaller TV. On a 32" widescreen, and with a projector, the Panasonic is miles ahead in quality.

  5. do DVD-R's play good then and VCD's, because that's what I'll mainly be playing.

My Hitachi would lose sync with my original dvds and vcds, I want to make sure that this laser is strong in this panasonic and will play dvds/dvd-rs/vcds just fine.

I have the Panasonic-DVD-S35 as well. Great unit plays it all. Also have the Sony, no problems but Know it won't play SVCD.
