PowerDVD always insists on playing all DVDs inserted in DVD-RW drive even tho I have set the properties for the drive in AutoPlay to "prompt me each time to choose an action."

I now have Nero7 Enhanced and would like it to open DVD movies or Video files, but Nero is not even listed in the AutoPlay choices.

And some times Windows Media AND PowerDVD BOTH try to open video files at the same time.

Some of my files are set to always open with Nero--like the stuff in the DVD_RTAV folders on the HD, BUT when I click on any of them, a window flies up saying can't play it.

When I first installed Nero7, I saw it as a choice in the "what to open with" box when a DVD or CD was inserted, but now it is gone. I know how to set Nero7 to always open with, but it doesn't work with RTAV stuff, so I don't know what it will play.

Can someone help me get on the right track please?

    Simple method : http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Autoplay-Repair/AutoplayRepair.html

Jumping the gate for newbies : http://www.the-pc-guru.com/How_to_add_an_AutoPlay_actio.php

    The simplest :

A: Enter windows explorer > tools > folder options
B: File types tab , locate video file by extension .

You can remove the associated file extension , and next time windows will ask ... you set it as default .

Or to change preferences for file extension IFO

Hit button "change" , and locate program to associate with playback .

    Click apply , ok , done .

Will Nero 7 play DVDs everytime, or is PowerDVD a special kind of DVD player and better left alone? It came with the Dell laptop.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Some things I didn't change because I don't know which program really can open the DVDs and movies.

Well it should , but I like nero's ability to be used for trouble shooting home made dvds where subs appear screwed up somehow , or menu function needs test before final burn ... besides , if power dvd decides it wants to play up , it can be a right pain to restore .

As for switching back , that should only happen if you allow it to do so .

Well, I uninstalled P.DVD and found a freeware that took its place, and it is working just great at playing any DVD I put in there. Am still trying to get Nero to show in AutoPlay in my CD/DVD drive.
