I would like to convert an XVID movie to a VCD (MPEG-1) with subtitles. Following the VCDhelp.com’s subtitle guide, I attempted to use VirtualDub’s frameserver and open the *.vdr file in TMPG Plus v 2.57, which gives me the following error.

File C:\Temp\movie.vdr.avi can not open, or unsupported

My system has the latest Xvid codec installed and plays the movie file in Window Media Player. Plus, TMPGenc is able to read and convert the original avi. The situation relates to frameserving from VirtualDub 1.5.4 (and 1.4.9) with addition of subtitles.

This scenario seems like a common topic on this forum, yet I have not been able resolve the frame serving situation with VirtualDub and TMPGenc. Please let me know if anyone has any insights into the situation. My process is outlined below.

1. File > Open and Open the Video.
2. Select Video > Filter to configure the subtitler filter. I selected ´subtitler-----------Avery Lee
3. Press [OK] which opens the ‘Subtitler: Configuration’ window/box
4. Open the movie.ssa file, created with Sub Station Alpha by clicking on the ...
5. Press [OK].
6. VirtualDub shows Preview screen
7. Chose File > Start Frameserver
8. A Frame Server Setup window appears, clicked [Start]
9. A save window appears, selected save file as movie.vdr.
10. Now this window appears, saying Frameclients installed: AVIFile only
11. Launch TMPGEnc.
12. Open the movie.vdr through the [Browse] button
13. ERROR here and the process halt.
The following relates to my trial and error process.

• Renamed the movie.vdr file to movie.vdr.avi but TMPGEnc still does not recognize the file.
• Tried VirtualDub 1.5.4 and 1.4.9
• Uninstalled and re-installed handler 1.5.4 and 1.4.9.
• Copied the file "msvcr70.dll" to the Windows\system32 directory Increased VFAPI plugin priority in TMPGEnc
• Turned on and off the proxy properly.

My system has Windows XP Pro Sp1 with TMPGEnc 2.57.41 and VirtualDub 1.5.4. Please let me know how to resolve the situation.
