Got a new system (barebones) and was wondering is there a best placement for the dvd-r burner. I heard they get rather hot.

Case: 3 - 5 1/4" Bays (will have another cdrw in one)

Thanks. I updated my computer profile, so it's current.

I know; don't laugh about the STB card (will be getting a Canopus) and you can console me about the dreaded Asus P4S8X (gold). It was too late when I found out about all the problems.

    Thanks in advance

yes, there is alot of heat generated from the unit, try and place it in a bay with space above and below.

If you have a free bay, it might not be a bad idea to pick up a drive bay fan. The unit slips into a regular 5 1/2" bay and vents the heat out the front of the machine. Also helps with heat dissapation for the CPU and high end video cards.

  3. dvd burners come with a fan in the back..so should help with the cooling...

try to minimize the burner usage for strictly burning DVDs

that means..no DVD ripping or CD burning....why??? because DVD-ROMs can be used for DVD ripping 1) they rip much faster than DVD burners 2) they're much cheaper to replace when broken (i.e. $30 vs. $170+) also, CD-RWs should be used for burning CDs 1) they usually burn faster than DVD burners (40+X vs. 8X) 2) they're much cheaper to replace when broken ($20 vs. $170+)
