  1. I posted a problem I'm having with DVD-Rs and have discovered a workaround however, I don't understand why this works, or better yet, what I am "working around". I would like your opinions on what you think is the source of my problem.

Here's the symptoms of my problem: I have burned DVDs using Roxio (Easy CD) and Sonid MyDVD. I have used generic 2x media, Sony 2x media and Optiodisc 1x media. In every combination of software and media, when I fill the disc to over 95%, the playback will freeze prior to reaching the end of the final segment.

Here's my workaround: I burn from Roxio to a Sony DVD-RW at 1x. The production plays back flawlessly to the end. I copy the DVD-RW to a DVD-R using B's Recorder Gold at 1x speed to the 2x rated media (generic or Sony). The resultng DVD-R also plays back flawlessly to the end.

Seems like an odd one that. Can't say I've had that problem yet since I've only used el-cheapo crap media that fails most of the time anyway (but since I got them I may as well use them up).

Having said that though, I would say there could be a problem with the burner...maybe it doesn't spin down enough to write the last part of the disk at 2x ... odd that you can write to a RW and then copy that to a R without a problem though.

With my current DVD-r's around 1 in 3 is bad.....crap Princo media.

  3. I voted for SW. I got (for free) 100 BulkPaq Gen2-s. If I author and burn them stright from Ulead, some of them play well. If I burn with Nero, no one disc will even be recognized by my player! No problem with Nero with other discs.
BTW. Check some other players too.

  4. Thanks for your comments on this. I am having the same problem and tried your solution which worked a treat.

Have you had any more thoughts since last October on what might be causing this problem.

Thanks again for saving me a lot of hasstle.

try burning from the start at 1x, since it works copying the RW over to the R at 1x it should work from the hard drive copying at 1x

  6. Just a thought, to what capacity are you burning them at. I mean are you burning 4.37 G or 4.38G?

  7. Thanks for comments - keep them coming!

I am using MyDVD which limits my options -- It only allows me to burn at "Auto" speed, so can't control this until I burn the dvd-rw back to dvd-r at 1x with Nero.

MyDvD only allows about 3.7 gigs to be burnt and I burn upto the limit. Haven't tried smaller sizes yet as I want to get whole 1 hour DV tapes onto disk. (That's why I got the Pioneer A05 in the first place!)

Before you suggest trying another app, I have tried DVDMovieFactory and still get the identical freezing problem.

Please keep coming up with ideas. Thanks.

weird...i use the same cheapo 1x princo media....only 1 bad in nearly 100 so far...you burning them at 2x with the 2x firmware hack??

@miket333@hotmail.com, you need to switch to another dvd burning proggie for a couple of reasons...

    1) so you can burn at the max of 4.38 gigs...no waste

    2) so you can control the burn speed.....at least remove that as a variable...because burning at faster speed may cause compatibility problems with certain dvd players....

    -------

also, are these "freezes" only occuring on your dvd player or also on your comp's DVD-ROM?

did you check your dvd player for compatibility with DVD-Rs?? https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

  9. Yes -- the problem also occurs in exactly the same way on my computer's dvd-rom

I will experiment with other makes of media, though want to avoid spending a fortune on coasters!

  10. It's nice to see I'm not alone. I haven't researched the problem any further since I found the work around (don't have the time). It would be interesting to test whether burning initially at 1x to 2x dvd-r media would also solve this (I did test burning initially to 1x media (Optiodisc) and still had the problem). However, I use Roxio to burn and it does not allow me to set the speed. I think it automatically detects the top speed the media will accept. I still use Roxio to burn because, imo, it produces the best quality (out of a few other apps I tested a while ago).

I also have the problem both on my dvd player and on my computer. I have tried copying the bad movie file and B-Recorder gives me a "corrupt file" message. So, I'm sure the dvd file is no good. My suspicion has always been that my laser is slightly weaker than the standard. As it burns the movie and moves out toward the outer edge of the disk, the surface speed of the disk increases (due to the outside moving faster than the inside and assuming the recorder does not slow the disk down to compensate for this). That's just a guess...
