  1. first let me say im a moron and i appologize. i din't read the rules well and im a moron. I admit it. it'll never hapen again i swear. next, to anyone having this problem with downloaded VIDEO FILES. if you download a video file and it will play in wmp but won't convert in tmpgenc and g-spot says its not an avi file, try using dvdtoavi and encode the video with divx or something. it should then encode with tmpgenc. i hope this helps anyone out there who has any problems with downloaded video files.

  4. it didn't let me save it first either. in dvdtoavi when you save, it has an option for recompretion. the default setting is no recompress. click on that and it will bring up a bunch of codec options. try different thing as the codecs you have may be bad cracks that wil decode but will not encode. keep trying till you find one that works. also, you might try opening virtualdub and recompressing another more encodable files as it will tell you what codecs you have are good for encoding and which are not. post back and let me know if this works for you.and dont as anyone else about wares as you can get stupid people like me in trouble.lol.

nar i didnt use gspot, but i can play it in win media play n stuff, i dont think its a codec prob, with dvd2avi it doesnt let me select save avi at all so i cant get to the compression stage.

  7. first of all. my movie played in windows media player to. second go to the tools section an get g-spot. its an incredibly usefull tool to tell you exactlly what codecs you need. i've hade problems before with encodeing movies that would play in wmp but wouldnt encode in tmpgenc and it was because i had enough codecs to play but not to encode. if that is your case, g-spot will tell you. if g-spot says that the file isnt an avci file, then use dvdtoavi. and as far as not leting you save, does it open and let you preview it? if it does, then click on file and save avi. when you do this, you will see no recompress. if you choose this, it wont save and the box on the right will say finished imediatelly. you need to change no recompress to another option. if you have divx 5.02 then try that. if you don't have divx 5.02, then that might be your problem. post back if you have a prob.

that dvd2avi thing didnt work, it wont let me preview the file or anything, so it must be an avi because dvd2avi opens files like mpeg2 and vob m2v etc. ill try the virtual dub mpeg2 thingo now

  10. ok, if it wont let it preview it then it is an avi and you dont have the same problem as me. go get g-spot and open the file and see what it says. i had the same problem as you about the same file as you and it had to do with the codec. turned out i had enough divx to play but not enough t encode. g-spot will tell you everyting. go get it im telling you.

oh, gspot says my avi is a mpeg, maybe its been renamed .avi
divxfix also says its not an avi, so i dont have an avi
normally when i have a mpg in the properties it has the name of the file then (mpeg)

  13. then you do have the same problem as me. when i open it with g-spot, the type says non avi file- type unknown. the video at the bottom says mediasubtype mpeg2_video and the audeo says mediasubtype mpeg1audiopaylo. all the other boxes for what codecs it uses are filled with n/a. by the way. i hope you realize that in dvdtoavi when you go to open a file, you might have to select all file types to see the file and select it, but once you select it, if the little black screen changes sises then it will work. to see if it wil word, you have to hit preview and then hit DISPLAY. if you see a picture, then go and make sure you have the divx pro codec pack version 5.0.5 . then you can use dvdtoavi to encode it into divx. also, when you select divx 5.0.5 to convert with, select configuration and tweak the bitrate settings. if you do this right, it will work very well with no side affects. i didnt think dvdtoavi was working for awhile thill i realised you had to hit display (f7 i think).hope that helps, if not then im stuck but i hope g-spot helps you. it helped me.good luck.

you can have a avi with mpeg , avi is just a wrapper -- there are more than 40 types of uncompressed and compressed avi files .
