last time i heard, DVD-R/+R comes only as DVD5....(w/ the exception of double-sided DVD-R/+R, but basically just acts as two DVD5s)

@g_shocker182, check out this thread https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167135

  4. Let me see if I can put this into a different way. Lets say I have to movie, lets say Blade 1 and Blade 2. If I ripped the VOB files for the movie only, and not the chapters or anything else, how would I go about adding those 2 movies or more on 1 dvd single sided disc?

  6. Ok, now that I have that, what's the max number of movies you can put on a single sided disc?

  8. Do you think the VOB file for the move only would be about the same size as a SVCD of the same movie?

    errrr............................................. ...... i seriously hope you're kidding :P

anywayz, DVD movies are encoded at much higher bitrates...usually 8+ mbit/s (some vary and may go lower, but still end up much higher than SVCD bitrate), while standard SVCD specs allow around 2.5 mbit/s max for video (8 vs. 2.5 .... you make the call)

also, the vob files contain multiple audio tracks (some really high quality and huge...most likely, you will only choose one and compress it down to mpeg 2 audio). most DTS audio tracks can reach nearly 1 gig alone...for just 1 track. if a movie has (DD 5.1, DD surround, and DTS)...these 3 audio tracks combined can be over 1.5 gigs....not counting the video encoded at 8+ mbit/s

there're the subtitles, but those are usually small.

so, to answer your question.....NO. personally, even when i encode my SVCDs at near max bitrate of 2520 kbit/s and audio of 224 kbit/s, the resulting mpg file is at most 40% of the original VOB files.

  11. Ok, the reason people are being to hit and miss in the answers is because this is a very common question and covered in the faqs/guides to the left. Also you know (or should) that a DVDR holds 4.3GB. So how much can you put on it? 4.3GB

Take a look the size of each movie and see what they add to. Most movies are 3-7GB so the answer is one movie per DVDR (unless you re-encode at a lower bitrate).

Author to a folder, using VOB as source, then DVD2one to shrink it to 4.38 GB. That'll fit two, but it won't be the same as the original. Given that it'll shrink at least 50%, I'd avoid that method. With DVD-R only costing $1 and discs only taking up little space, there's no reason to do this.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.
