  3. Your DVD player won't play DVDs under 4GB? That is ODD!

I think I would be looking for a new DVD player and take the one you have back if it is still under warranty.

That being said, if you just want to fill extra space, just create anoter directory and put stuff in it. You DVD player should ignore it.

Either you have a problem in your authoring process, or your player needs some repair. Or you need to finalize your disks when burning.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

    Yes DVD-ROM content
    FILES
must be placed outside the VIDEO_TS folder
in order to play the title, the VIDEO_TS must contain movie files only

    never heard of needing 4gb..
Maybe you're burn program fails to finlize the disc if you don't burn more than 4gig on the plus disc

Just finalize the 1 gig project and it'll play without addition of GARBAGE files

yeah I'd just make a folder on the root of the drive called BUFFER and fill it up with stuff. A very odd problem though never heard of it before. What player is this?

my standalone (Philips 710) also will not play DVDs under 4GB-says "NO DISC"-so I have zipped up a few files (according to what size might be neede) and just burn them to the ROOT directory of the DVD. This has not failed yet-and I do it to all DVDs that are under 4GB.

Who wants to email these baffled individuals?
..Look this guy used only Taiyo Yuden on SingleLayerBackups and couldn't get consistent results..maybe the first bad burn was under 4 gig! some one should tell the folk!

OR SMURFIE AT LEAST POST YOUR PLAYER's RESULTS!
caus these folks are in the dark:
The first disk I tried I simply ripped it all and created a new data dvd in Nero and it would not play at all.

Next I did the same with another movie and this time I ensured I created a new dvd-video with nero and coppied the comtents of the dvd to Video_TS folder in nero and burnt it.

This time to my great surprise it worked a charm!

  10. Danne,

I have the same Philips unit. Here's what I do. If I have a complete DVD that I want to copy that's smaller than 4 GB I use DVDShrink's "re-author" mode, to add duplicate copies of smaller streams until I've reached the 4GB barrier. I make sure to put them on the end of the DVD. You won't get the menu's with this approach, but it's extremely quick and easy. I only really care about the main movie anyway, and it's somewhat rare that I have a complete DVD that's under 4 GB.

    Good luck.

  12. are you guys only having trouble playing DVD-R/+R under 4 gigs..or even the original commercial DVDs under 4 gigs are giving you trouble....

either way, someone really needs to take phillips on this issue...this is a major design flaw...i guess they assumed that the studios would fill the DVDs to the max, but they made an ASS out of U and ME.

Have any of you having problems with half-empty DVDs and a Philips DVD player tried to first create a DVD image and then burn it using DVDDecrypter? I believe Nero is here to blame, not Philips!

I have never had any problems playing DVDs even under 1 Gb with my Philips DVD 622 / DVDR 980 (both with upgraded firmwares), but I never use Nero for DVD video burning. You should really try DVDDecrypter and / or upgrading your player firmware.

He's talking about a very old player
OF COURSE YOUR NEW PHILLIPS is fine..the Philips DVD 622 / DVDR 980

Did you even look at all the confused 710 player owners before you posted?

I don't think 711 is any older than my 622 (I considered buying 711 at the time I bought my 622). In any case, there are firmware updates for these players.

  16. I know thereis a firmware upgrade for my dvd711 but you can only upgrade those who came with the "flashMEM IC.", not those with "promMEM IC".Mine is with "prom" so i have to change hardware in mine first!!!

  17. The Philips unit (DVD-711) has no problem playing comercial DVD's under 4GB, just DVD-R's under 4 GB. I have the latest firmware and I still have the problem. Here's a particular example...

Gone with the wind is a two disc set. Disc 1 is approx 3.8 GB, disc 2 is approx 4.2 GB. Both disc's are well under 4.7GB. Both commercial disc's play with no problems. When I do a 1=1 backup to DVD-R, of both disc's, only disc 2 will play. If I re-author disc 1 unsing DVDShrink, and add duplicate smaller streams, (just grabbed one of the "extra's" stream), to the end of the DVD set, thus pumping my over-all disc size to just greater than 4GB, (4.1 GB in this instance), everything works fine.

Not sure if this helps anyone, but it's what I have to do to get DVD-R's under 4GB to play.

    Good luck,

    Krush

So how are you making your 1:1 backup? Burn with Nero or create an image first?

  19. I'm burning with "CopytoDVD". CopytoDVD burns directly to DVD using the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" DVDShrink created below the VIDEO_TS directory.

So it semms like none of you having problems with <4 Gb discs have tried creating an image first.

  22. Why should it be any different if i create an iso image then burn??

  23. Do what I do on disks that aren't full...

I internet for info on the title, such as the Avengers episodes from the Mystery channel, Make a folder called info and put the internet content into that folder on the dvd.

That folder might have the episode(s) information in it along with biographies of the cast, copies of the cover and/or dvd label that I created and used. Anything else of interest.

By doing that I can make another cover if it gets damaged/lost etc.

I can read that data later in the dvdrom on the computer anytime I'm interested or need to refer to it. And of course I can now delete it off of the Hard disk freeing up space as it is archived in the same place as the show.

Of course I do this even though I don't have to be over 4Gbs to play.

    Cheers

It just is. Not just the files matter, but the order they are written onto the disc matter too. Creating an image first is known to be the most compatible DVD burning method, so it wouldn't do any harm to try it.

Just download Ifoedit, DVDDecrypter and Imgtools, if you don't have them already (all freeware) and try to create an image with ifoedit+imgtools -> burn with DVDDecrypter. Only after some of you having this problem has tried this method out unsuccesfully I'll believe it's really the players fault.

  25. I've tried it using IMG tools before with no success. I can't remember what I used to burn the image though. Maybe someone else will have sucess.
