windows media player nor WIn DVD cannot play avi that I downloaded , any other freewares that can play this back

You need the proper audio and video codecs to play or encode an avi file. Get Gspot from the Tools section and test your file, it will tell you the required codecs and if they are installed on your system. Install the codecs as required, there are several common ones but there are many out there.
