A recommendation would be Norton.

ANTIVIRUS

As BJ_M stated no connection is a good connection .. hehe -
Norton is a good suggestion as then your machine will not run and you will get no virus or hacking ...

Kerio Personal Firewall from www.kerio.com
Small size and works better in my experience than both Norton and Zone Alarm plus best of all, its free also. -
I've used Norton products since 1994 and have never had problems with anything (and I was smart enough to never install Crash Guard when it existed).

And why i answered about norton ? because on countless forums , and in many corporate systems - all norton products are either banned, removed upon discovery , or warrenty (or in the case of some products) is void if you are using some of the products they (norton) have (doesnt only go for norton products either)...
it seems to be a well known fact so don't be so snotty about it please in your remarks - wasn't it you who keeps wanting to argue about nonsense (like your statement that dvd's are not mpeg2) ..
I was trying to inject a little humour -- thats all , most mature people would be able to understand that.
the questions get asked here a lot "what is the BEST........(fill in blank)"
well we all (most of us) like to try to help out such questions -- but in many cases (more often than not) , they can not be answered as asked..
it happens OVER AND OVER ...
and of course -- you will get many different opinions also ...
but the question was "BEST" , i answered truthfully , the BEST method ..
the question should have been what is the best personal firewall for free or low cost and suggestion of a good antivirus .. or where can i go to get more information...
and a quick search on google turns up 300 sites with reviews on personal firewall and 1000 sites with reviews on antivirus ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

I'm not a theif, if you work for the government then Norton is a free download.
Also, just wondering what antivirus or firewall do you guys prefer instead of Nortons products. Every place I've ever worked had Norton Corporate installed on there computers. I'm sure there is something better or more reliable than Norton but every time you do a search it always comes up the "best". I currently use Norton Corpate V7.60 but I was going to give Norton 2004 a try. But since some of you think Norton isn't all that it's cracked up to be I'm open for suggestions on better software. Opinions??

U.S. Military. It's a free download for anyone who has access to authorized DOD sites/server. So if your sending something via your home computer to a DOD server you reduce the chance of sending a virus and corrupting the system. Your allowed to put it on your home computer so it's "free" otherwise they (the DOD) would have to give you your own computer with a "paid" license on it. At least that's my understanding of it. I'm sure the government paid some licensing fee somewhere at some time. But as for me, I don't care it's "free" I didn't have to pay for it.

you would think that the DOD would not be running thier email servers on windows and that they would "clean" email ... but i could see that it would be an issue (as for any large corporation), plus of course - some if it is encrypted ...

They use WindowsNT and Microsoft Outlook at least for the End user, the rest is all unix. It's the easiest for people to use that has "security" (login name) so the internet nazi's (LAN shop) can watch everything you do. They actually banned people from gong to ebay.com.
Even when you could log in remotely you could only go to certain folders files that are virtually seperated from the rest of the Unclass net. People try to hack them at least a hundred times a day. That actually got rid of off-site remote access to minimize the chances of someone hacking a persons simple login name and password like your dog's name or wifes birthday. I got my norton thru them but when they turned off remote access we still have norton. It's not like they're going to go to each persons house (hundreds if not thousands) and stand there and watch you uninstall it or charge you $49.95 to keep it, ya know :P
