I hope I'm putting this in the correct forum.

I have an Mpeg2 file recorded from a VHS tape to DVD using a set top DVD recorder (Pioneer DVR7000). I recorded it at a resolution of 544X480. I then ripped it to my HD.

The clip is is perfect sync.

However, when I try to author it, it loses sync after de/re-multiplexing.
At first I thought it was the fault of DVD Lab, but then I used both mpeg2vcr and VideoPack 5 to de/re-multiplex.

In both cases, the new file is out of sync. So I'm assuming there are some kind of PTS or other errors in the source file. (I've tried using mpeg2dvd's A/V sync adjustment in re-multiplexing, but can't tell any difference.

Anyone know where I should be looking for info on this issue?

    Thanks.

  2. Does it work if u tell DVD Lab to not de/remultiplex, just to use the file as is?

During the process of creating VOB files, the source files are de/re-multiplexed.

To answer your question, no, the sync turns bad even when importing files w/o de-multiplexing.

    How did you do this?

I did exactly what youve done once (from VHS -> DVD Recorder -> My computer) and it worked fine. What I did was this:

Just copy/pasted the VOB files from the DVD to a folder, and then used VOBEdit to join them (since the movie spanned several). Then you can just rename the VOB file to MPEG, since thats what VOB is, pretty much.

I think that might be cheating a little, but certainly worked for me, no audio sync problems, and I authored using DVD Lab which also worked.

If all else fails, you could probably try to re-sync the file yourself with some audio editor and some trial & error. Pain in the ass, certainly, but if nothing else works...

As I said, I used mpeg2vcr to de-multiplex. I used it again to re-multiplex, using the A/V sync feature. It made no difference.

I finally got it synced, which I'll describe in a second.

First, more info on the file:

Recorded from VHS to a Pioneer set top DVD recorder in VRO format (I prefer VRO because on this recorder it uses variable bit rate as opposed to CBR in the other record mode).

Then Ulead MF2 to convert the VRO into an mpeg w/AC3.
At this point the file was still in sync.

After trying several programs to de/re-multiplex, the file was always out of sync.

Even importing it into DVD Lab as is didn't work, because when the disc is compiled, all files are re-multiplexed into VOB's, loosing sync with this one file.

What ended up working, and don't ask me why, is I authored only this file, using DVD Lab. No menu or anything.

The newly created VOB file played in sync on my computer, so I simply imported that into my project, replacing the original file. The disc came out fine.

All I can figure is there must have been some audio sync error in the original file that didn't show up until de/re-multiplexing it.
