  2. IMO, capture at the max resolution for your region. I capture at 720X480 which is max for NTSC. Some will say this is a waste depending on what you are capturing from (you didn't say). If you have the room (2 hours = 30 gig's) capture AVI. If you need to conserve space the huffy codec seems to be the way to go... altho I've never used it.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

Most will agree that you should capture at least, in the resolution of your final output, with the exception of VCD, where you should still capture at full vertical resolution, and then resize to 288.

    Format H x V
    DVD: 720x576
    SVCD: 480x576
    CVD: 352x576
VCD: 352x576 (resize to 288 in editing)

Some will also argue for full horizontal resolution (720), and then resize it down if necessary while editing. The only answer here is for you to try both, and see if your happy with a lower resolution capture. Just convert a small sample of each and see which looks better to your eyes. Capturing at full resolution certainly shouldn't hurt things, so if you have the CPU cycles, and hard drive space, just capture at full D1 (720x576). If you don't, then look at lower horizontal resolutions.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
