I bought Dazzle DV-Editor SE. I know it's low grade but for $50 I got the firewire cable, card and software. I figured I could start there. I think my card is installed correctly but can't get the program to capture my video. Anybody out there who might be able to help me.
I get an error that says unable toopen the specified device. Please check if your device machine is ready? From the video program (Ulead Video Studio)
How can I check my firewire card is working properly. Thanks! From (getting desperate) Lisa

Can you verify that you are using Ulead Directshow, and that DV Control is MS DV?
Might want to try having the camera powered on BEFORE you launch Videostudio.
Last, I'm not sure if the card would allow IRQ sharing, but you might want to check for conflicts.
hope this helps. -
Your reply got me more confused.
I don't know what MS DV is?
I'm using Ulead StudioVideo that is all I know. Where else do I find more info?
I did try to have my camcorder powered up before running video studio. That didn't seem to help anything. I can't get past the start button. It won't let me click on the capture button
What is IRQ sharing. I read somewhere that you need to make sure my hardware supports the software, how do I check that?
I'm so brand new at this and have no one to guide me as I don't know anybody who even has a digital camcorder that does this! Thanks!

...pls bear with me. I'm at work right now, and I can give you the blow-by-blow when I get home.
I saw your post about the Win98 version. You should be able to see this via Control Panel/Systems, and the screen will have the info on your windows version. Like I said, I need to be on my home PC to tell you the distinguishing display to confirm if you're using Second Edition (unless somebody posts the numbers here).
IRQ sharing can been seen thru Control Panel/Systems, and then click on the Device manager tab. With 'My Computer' selected, click on Properties. It'll give you a list of IRQ numbers, and their assignments. An IRQ number is assigned to your firewire card, and nothing else should be assigned to this number (except with PCI Steering...something, which is OK).
As for Ulead Directshow, click on the GLOBAL OPTIONS button, which is on the left-hand side of the Videostudio interface, the button that looks like 'G>'. Select 'CHANGE CAPTURE PLUG-IN', and you should have Ulead Directshow selected.
I don't remember where you find MS DV Device Control. I need to be on my home PC. I'll post later (sorry if this is getting to be an installment basis).
The Dazzle DV-Editor SE should have a 'QUICK REFERENCE', and it should be able to help you, in case you can't wait.
And by the way, I'm using the very same card.
hope this helps. -
Thank you so much for your reply!
I looked at the IRQ numbers (still don't really understand but the firewire had a few things attached to that same number. It's 11 and here is what is also listed as 11
1. Intel(r)82801AA USB Universal Host controller
2. PCI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
3. HSP56 WDM Device
4. ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
5. ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
I don't have a problem with capture plug in, it only gives me that one option.
It's when I want to change device controller I get that error message, unable to open the specified device please check if your device machine is ready. I think that is where the problem is though I'm not sure what they are talking about and i've been through their tutorial and emailed them and called them (on hold forever finally left a message)
So your help is greatly appreciated
Lisa

- Win98SE:
Control Panel/System, you should see Windows 98 Second Edition, and has a '2222' on the version number.
- IRQ11:
Might have to get dirty, either you manually change IRQ numbers, and/or you swap board locations in your PCI slots.
I never saw this problem when I plugged my board in. I'd say you look into the windows version first, as the second item involving IRQ settings has the possibility of giving 'scary' results. -
If you are using WIN98SE- have you installed the Firewire Patch (it should be on the Installation CD)

Did you start playing the video source that you are trying to capture first, before you select "capture" or change the device controller? If not, try that.
