  1. i have a few Region 1 dvds but just curious, does DVD Decryptor rip DVD's from other regions? My DVD writer isnt locked and i still have 4 changes left, i dont have any software installed such as DVD Genie, Region Killer etc.

Would i have to play the disk to rip the dvd to harddrive using DVD Decrypter?

  2. No, you don't have to play the disk to rip it -- although there are *some* occasions in which playing a disk (or starting to play it) somehow "helps" with the ripping process.

As a general rule I never play a disk I'm ripping.

  4. DVD Decrypter will rip any region.

I tend to use SmartRipper out of choice, and that does sometimes require that you "unlock" the drive by playing a short piece of the movie. Therefore, if you are ripping content that is not of your region, you will need to use something like DVD Genie to make sure your counters don't change. Don't forget that XP has a region counter (although mine isn't set and I don't have any problems following on from that), as does your hardware - you may have 4 changes left on your writer but don't forget while you probably write region free, you might not want to inadvertantly lock it to say R1 by accident one day.

I usually suggest people invest in a DVD-ROM drive for a nominal fee that you can easily toggle through software or flash with region free firmware (I got a Lite-on for about £25). That way you won't be too heartbroken if you accidentally kill it with the new firmware. You will probably find it rips quicker than your writer as well, plus it saves wear and tear on a more expensive part.

I regularly have to use discs from different regious, and using a region free DVD-ROM, DVD Genie, Smart Ripper and not setting the region code in XP, I have yet to have any problems with region coding and have never had to hack the writer in order to achieve it.

With the Lite-on drives you don't need firmware changes.
Just get RPCDE2, Google it, for the drive and get the current free version of Region Killer for the PowerDVD side of things.

  6. I did have the software toggle for my drive, but I'm a lazy bugger and having to change it every time was a pain in the butt. I only had to flash it the once, you see...

Besides, who needs warranties anyway ?

DVD Genie is also free (at least it was the last time I had the need to download it), and works with PowerDVD and WinDVD. It has quite a few other options available too. I have never used the region killer described above since DVD Genie has always worked for me, but it's good to have an alternative.
